Introduction
================================================================================
Welcome to my first football FAQ! I hope it goes a little more smoothly
than my (incomplete) baseball FAQ. :) Anyway, if you have a question
about the game, specifically the PlayStation 2 version, let me know.
Before you attempt to email me, please read through the Frequently Asked
Questions section in this FAQ. That section has some of the more commonly-
asked questions and answers, and you may save both of us some time by
reading that section first. When emailing me, please put "Madden 2007"
in the Subject Line. This will likely result in a faster response. I
should warn you about my response rate. Typically, I respond to about 90%
of my emails, but because of the popularity of the Madden franchise, I
cannot guarantee that sort of response rate, but I'll certainly try to
keep up with all of the mail.
If you don't want to use email, an alternative is a message board. Below
is an address for the Madden 2007 (PS2) message boards on GameFAQs. There
are others who visit that forum, who I am sure can and will help answer
any question you may have.

If you don't have a question and would like to suggest adding a strategy
to the guide, email me also, with the "Madden 2007" in the Subject Line,
and I'll credit you for it, should I decide to use it.

Version 0.6 - Sept 03, 2006 - 274 KB
I finished the Madden card list and added to the Frequently Asked Questions
list. There's not much else to add to the FAQ in my opinion, so I don't
expect to update this anymore.

Game Modes (00002)
================================================================================
Madden 2007 has more than just one or two different game modes. Below you
will find a brief description as to what you can expect to find while in
that part of the game.
PLAY NOW
Challenge either the CPU or a friend to a game of football. This
obviously isn't a season game or anything like that - it's an
exhibition game. You get the option to choose teams, stadiums,
uniforms, etc. This is also a great way to introduce yourself into
the basics of the Madden game series.
PLAY ONLINE
With certain versions of the game, you can play online against
friends or even people you've never met before. Depending on the
game system you're using, you may need to buy additional hardware,
so be sure to consult your user manual when attempting to use this
game mode.
FRANCHISE
This is one of the older and most popular game modes in the Madden
series, and most games aren't viewed complete without this mode.
Build your dream team for up to 30 seasons. You can change coaches
and draft players just like the General Managers do in real life.
NFL SUPERSTAR: HALL OF FAME
In the Superstar mode, you create a player and take him from the NFL
Draft and hope that he makes it into the prestigious NFL Hall of Fame.
You take tests, do interviews, go to practices, get endorsement deals,
and of course play football.
NFL NETWORK
Sterling Sharpe walks you through three select plays on both offense
and defense for each team. After he describes the play to you, you
can practice the play against your team's defense for as long as you
wish.
TOURNAMENT
Set up your own tournament with 8 or 16 teams and see who comes out
the winner.
MINI-CAMP
Tour NFL cities in the Madden cruiser and fine-tune your playing
skills in the Mini-Camp mode. You can also earn trophies along
the way in various drills for Madden Cards.
RUNNING ATTACK
Select two teams to test the ability to run the ball and then defend
against the run. On offense, you'll use the main running back, and
on defense, you'll control one of the linebackers.
TWO MINUTE DRILL
Earn valuable points and Madden Cards, while working on your skills
at the same time.
PRACTICE
Work on your playing skills in practice. This allows you to better
familiarize yourself with your team's playbook and players.
================================================================================
Player Positions (00003)
================================================================================
There are a number of positions for players to play at. If you aren't at
all familiar with football, this section will give you a much better idea
of who does what on the field. However, if you're familiar with the sport,
you can skip right on past this, of course.
OFFENSE
???????
Quarterback (QB) - The quarterback is perhaps the single most important
offensive player on the team. He touches the football on nearly every
play. If it's a passing play, he passes it; if it's a running play, he
hands the ball off to whoever is running it.
Running Back (RB)/Tail Back (TB) - Don't be confused if you hear someone
mention tail back or running back, because they're the same position. In
professional, you'll usually hear running back, and in college, you'll
usually hear tail back, but it really doesn't matter. (I usually refer
to the position as running back)
The running back is responsible for running the ball down the field, once
he is handed the ball from the quarterback. Depending on the play called,
he may be expected to block defenders from tackling the quarterback, and
he also runs short passing routes when called upon.
Fullback (FB) - Fullbacks are typically larger than running backs - 20-30
pounds heavier in fact. They are mostly used for blocking, leading the
way for a running back. The fullback also has the speed to be used for
rushing and receiving, like the Running back.
Wide Receiver (WR) - The wide receiver is the primary passing target for
the quarterback. They're often tall and very fast, capable of out-jumping
and out-running the defenders.
Tight End (TE) - Often a blocker, the tight end is also used for receiving.
He typically has a size advantage over defenders, and is sometimes
taller than their wide receiver counterparts. The passes they catch
are often over the middle of the field, just beyond the first down mark.
Center (C) - Centers give the ball to the quarterback and punters to start
the play. Often very large in size, centers are also responsible for
keeping the defenders from getting at the quarterback.
Guard (G) - Guards flank the center and are responsible for blocking
against defenders, but they also have to try to open holes in the line to
allow the running back or fullback through to run the ball.
Offensive Tackle (OT) - Tackles flank the guard and are also responsible
for blocking against defenders. They're job is very much the same that
of the guards.
DEFENSE
???????
Defensive Tackle (DT) - They are in the middle of the defensive line, and
they're trying to either tackle the running back or fullback who is
running through the line, or they're trying to rush the quarterback.
Defensive End (DE) - The ends flank the defensive tackles, and their
jobs are very much the same.
Middle Linebacker (MLB) - Middle linebackers are large and agile. They
typically tackle the runs up through the middle and any short passes up
the middle.
Outside Linebacker (OLB) - Often smaller and faster than their middle
linebacker counterparts, they must protect from short passes to the outside,
but also protect from the outside runs.
Cornerback (CB) - Cornerbacks have to cover the wide receivers, so they
are very quick and agile.
Free Safety (FS) - These guys have great acceleration since they're free
to do almost anything they want to do. They are free to cover wide
receivers or even go after (blitz) the quarterback.
Strong Safety (SS) - Strong safeties are resposible for tackling wide
receivers and tight ends. They're quick and very strong because of this.
SPECIAL TEAMS
?????????????
Kicker (K) - Kickers are responsible for kick offs and field goals. They
are often the smallest of the players.
Punter (P) - Punters are responsible for punting on fourth down.
================================================================================
Defense (00004)
================================================================================
There is often a great deal of emphasis put on offense, but I believe a
defense is equally as important. Offense may win games, but defense wins
championships, or so the saying goes.
For a defense to be successful, you don't necessarily have to stop the other
team on each and every play, just stop them from scoring. This is a much
more realistic goal, afterall. When it comes to offense versus defense, I
actually prefer to play defense. I know most are the other way around,
enjoying racking up the yards on offense, but I enjoy shutting down my
opponent's offense.
Below, you'll find a brief description of each of the general defensive
formations, which includes the advantages and disadvantages of using the
particular formation.
4-3
???
The 4-3 defense is likely the most commonly used defense formations. It
involves four lineman, three linebackers, two cornerbacks, one free
safety, and one strong safety. This is a great overall formation, but
is best for defending against the run. If you're forced to defend an
offense using three or four wide receivers, I'd recommend selecting a
different formation.
3-4
???
The 3-4 defense is much like that of the 4-3 formation, and also very
popular. It involves three lineman, four linebackers, two cornerbacks,
one strong safety, and one free safety. With the additional linebacker,
you will be able to better defend the short pass and the outside runs,
compared to the 4-3.
46
??
The 46 defense is much like that of the 4-3 formation, but not very popular
in today's game. It involves four lineman, three linebackers, two
cornerbacks, one strong safety, and one free safety. This defensive
formation is good for run stopping, as one of those safeties will be close
to the line of scrimmage, providing speed. With that speed, you will also
be able to blitz, providing pressure on the quarterback. If the quarterback
is able to find a wide receiver open deep down the field, you will find
yourself in some trouble.
Nickel
??????
The Nickel defense typically involves four lineman, two linebackers, and
five defensive backs. With the additional defensive backs, you'll be able
to provide a better defense against a passing offensive situation. This
defense is susceptable to a run, so make sure the offense will be passing.
Dime
????
The Dime defense typically involves four lineman, one linebacker, and
six defensive backs. With the additional defensive backs, you'll be able
to provide a better defense against a passing offensive situation. This
defense is susceptable to a run, so make sure the offense will be passing.
Quarters
????????
The Quarters defense typically involves three lineman, one linebacker, and
seven defensive backs. With the additional defensive backs, you'll be able
to provide a better defense against a passing offensive situation. This
defense is susceptable to a run, so make sure the offense will be passing.
Goal Line
?????????
The Goal Line defense involves several linemen and linebackers and a couple
of defensive backs. This formation should really only be used when your
opponent's offense is in a short yardage situation and running the ball.
Although you are given defensive backs, you may be in a world of hurt if
your opponent decides to pass the ball. There's always a chance they could
do a play-action pass for short yardage, so be careful. Make sure you have
your audibles set so that you can quickly find a good pass defense if you
notice something odd at the line.
================================================================================
Offense (00005)
================================================================================
The bulk of the points you will score will obviously be on offense. A
balanced offense is required to effectively move the ball down the field.
The best advice I can give someone is to vary your offense. Don't call
the same play over and over; the defense will learn what you're doing and
shut your play down. The same play calls aren't the only thing you need to
vary; you have to vary what type of play... run vs pass. Mix it up often,
and don't be afraid to use the occasional play-action pass. This is a great
way to confuse the defense, getting a linebacker or two to bite on the
possible run, while the quarterback drops back for a pass.
If you're not happy with the playbook your team is given by default, choose
another. Some team playbooks are very balanced, while others may favor
either the pass or run a bit more. You can also create your own playbook,
which will offer you a lot of input into your own playbook.
TIP: If you're running low on time, hold the L2 or R2 button after you
call your play. This will actually stop the clock until you
release the buttons. It will allow your players to get to the line
of scrimmage without any time on the clock expiring. It's
kind of a cheat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Running The Ball (00006)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When running the ball, you will require a hole in the line. If you don't
see one, try to get to the outside as quickly as possible, as it's only
a matter of time until the defense ends up in the backfield, taking you down
for a loss. If you are able to find a hole, get right up in there and hit
the sprint button, along with the appropriate juke button should you need
to get around a defender. If you're lucky enough to have a fullback blocking
ahead of you, don't be afraid to follow him to one side or the other. Some
of my biggest runs are because of my fullback knocking defenders down on
their butts, allowing me to sprint right on by, picking up several yards
and the ever important first down.
Going around defenders isn't your only option when running the ball, of
course. In Madden 2006, we were given the Truck Stick. It was very much
like the Hit Stick for the defensive side of the ball. When the runner
(running back, wide receiver, etc), you can use the Truck Stick to knock
the defender down, shedding the tackle. It doesn't always work, which is
why I prefer to try and avoid the tackler with a well-timed spin move, juke,
stiff-arm, or just have a blocker take him out for me. One disadvantage
of using the Truck Stick, also known as the Highlight Stick, is it increases
the odds of you fumbling the ball. If your running back is smaller and
more ellusive than say a larger back, like Jerome Bettis, when you hit the
Highlight Stick, your smaller, more ellusive back will try to evade the
tackler by ducking the tackler and doing other cool moves.
If you are trying to run the ball to one side of the field, but have noticed
that the defense has stacked that side of the field, you have three options.
You can change the direction of the play, you can audible an entirely new
play, or you can send your tight end in motion so that he blocks on the
other side of the field, allowing you to still run there.
A common mistake rookies make when running the ball is instantly hitting
the speed burst button. Lay off of it until your blockers do their job.
Going too fast too soon may result in you either running into your own
lineman or you may even end up running right into the man your blocker
was supposed to block, but you were in too much of a hurry to let him do
his job.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Passing The Ball (00007)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After you call your play and are approaching the line of scrimmage, take a
look at your defense. What formation are they using? Are they in 4-3 or
are they in Nickel or Dime and expecting a pass. With Nickel or Dime, their
defense will have more defensive backs, which means you'll have a more
difficult time passing the ball. You could consider changing the play or
perhaps using the playmaker option to have one of your wide receivers run
a quick curl or something else short.
When it comes to actually throwing the ball, make sure your quarterback's
feet are planted. If he is on the run, his passes will likely be inaccurate,
resulting in either incomplete passes and even interceptions. A bullet pass
thrown on the run is also likely going to be incomplete. Throwing on the run
can be dangerous, so if you are in a situation where you have to throw while
running, try to lob the ball a little. The odds are a lob will allow the
receiver to get where he needs to be to catch the ball and not result in an
interception or incomplete pass.
If you have a wide receiver or tight end that you can send in motion, give
it a shot. You may be able to interpret what sort of defense your opponent
is currently running (aside from the obvious formation), and the motion man
may end up causing a little confusion with the defense.
================================================================================
Special Teams (00008)
================================================================================
You're not going to be able to score a touchdown every time you have the
ball. On these occasions, you'll likely have to either punt the ball or
kick a field goal, depending on where you are on the field. If you're in
field goal range on third down, but are on the far left or right of the
field, you may wish to use that third down for a run or short pass to
the middle of the field. This will allow for an easier field goal kick.
If you're to the extreme left or right on the field, you will have to
adjust your kicker's aim. Obviously with this situation, there's a chance
that you could kick the ball too far to the right or left of the field goal
posts. For this reason, it's easier to kick from the center of the field,
especially when the wind can become an issue during an angled kick.
If you're in a punting situation, kick the ball fairly hard. If the line
of scrimmage is in your opponent's territory, you may want to try a shorter,
angled punt. Aim for the pylons near the end zone and try to get the ball
out of bounds within the five yard line. If you end up kicking it in the
endzone, the opponent will get the ball at the 20-yard line, so try to
make them start as far back as you can on offense.
On punt and kick-off returns, there's really not much to talk about... much
like the other subjects of special teams, lol. Anyway, try to watch for
where your blockers are and try to find a hole to run through. Jukes and
spins can help you elude tacklers and gain extra yards.
================================================================================
Team Profiles (00009)
================================================================================
Below you'll find complete profiles for the teams available to you in the
game, which includes a full roster. The figures are actually from the XBox
360 version and are from VG Sports' website. Several sites posted this
information just before the game was released, such as IGN and GameSpot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arizona Cardinals (00010)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stadium: Cardinals Stadium (2006-)
2005 Record: 5-11
Head Coach: Dennis Green
Division: NFC West
Overall Rating: 87
Offense Rating: 88
Defense Rating: 85
The 2006 Cardinals have made some big changes recently. They've got a brand
new stadium, a great new backup quarterback in Matt Leinert and a new starting
running back in Edgerrin James. Arizona certainly has the potential for a
big turnaround. Despite having one of the league's top running backs, the
success of their running game will depend on its mediocre offensive line.

The 2006 Falcons have made two note-worthy acquisitions. The additions of
John Abraham from the New York Jets and Lawyer Milloy from the Buffalo Bills
will provide the Falcons with a better defense. The Falcons have one of the
better running schemes in the league, and with the light-footed Michael Vick
a constant threat at quarterback, the Falcons look to continue with a strong
running game. There are a lot of questions surrounding All-Pro tight end
Alge Crumpler, who has had shoulder surgery recently, and his abilities have
been questioned. As long as he's healthy, Crumpler will be a big target for
Michael Vick to find.

The Ravens signed veteran quarterback Steve McNair in the offseason. McNair
should provide the Ravens the quality quarterback they've been looking for.
Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton should rack up even more yards than they did
last season at the wide receiver position. Also, with Jamal Lewis at
running back, the Ravens have a fairly solid offense. Their defense, anchored
by linebacker Ray Lewis, is still great. If there is one obvious problem
with the team, it's the offensive line. McNair may have a good arm and be
fast on his feet, but he'll likely get a lot of pressure from the defense.

A lot of eyes will be on J.P. Losman to see if he will be the Bills' QB
of the future. Many have doubts, including me. None of the Bills' QBs
have very good ratings, fairly mediocre actually. If the Bills cannot
get a passing game going, a lot of pressure will be placed on Willis
McGahee, their running back. Despite his talent, McGahee will likely face a
4-3 or 4-4 a lot if the Bills don't pose a threat in their passing game.

The Panthers did very well last year. Steve Smith served as a go-to receiver
for Jake Delhomme and wowed crowds with long passes, racking up over 1500
yards. With the acquisition of wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, the Panthers
are looking to put on another aerial assault.

The Bears are a one-sided team. Their defense is incredible, while their
offense is deplorable. They have several good players on offense, but
none of them are superstars and don't especially stand out. If you're going
to have success with the Bears, it'll be with a mediocre offense and a
stellar defense.

The Bengals have one of the top offenses in the league. The three top
offensive threats include Carson Palmer, Rudi Johnson, and Chad Johnson, a
trio which reminds me of Dallas' championship team from the 1990s with Troy
Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin at the same positions.

You'll find some decent defensive players, but the Browns are lacking some
power on offense. Reuben Droughns is a tough running back, but the Browns
don't have much of a passing game. Charlie Frye saw limited action last
year, but he's young and has potential.

Without a doubt the biggest change on the team is at wide receiver.
Keyshawn Johnson was released by Dallas, who later signed Terrell Owens.
There really isn't much else as far as major changes are concerned. The
defense is average, but will improve as they get used to the 3-4.

To combat a salary cap problem, the Broncos had to release their leading
running back, Mike Anderson. The Broncos should be just fine, as Tatum Bell
and Ron Dayne both looked good last year. Jake Plummer continues to improve
at the quarterback position and should be able to put up some great numbers
again. The strength of their defense comes from their linebackers and
defensive backs.

The Lions have had a poor team for years, and there are no signs of great
improvement. The quarterback position has two average quarterbacks looking
for the starting position, with neither of them likely to be a huge star.
Kevin Jones should have a better year at running the ball, as the Lions have
a better offensive line than they did a few years ago. The defense is held
together by Pro Bowl tackle Shaun Rogers.

Everyone was curious about whether or not QB Brett Favre would return for
another season, and when he announced he'd return, many were surprised with
his decision. Last year was his worst, posting terrible numbers. Although
the Packers don't have any stars at the running back position, they have
three good backs. Their offense lives and dies because of their offensive
line, which has been very poor at providing Favre with some time to find open
receivers.

Everything is looking up for the Texans this year. They have made a number
of moves on both sides of the ball during the offseason, acquiring some
talented players. Eric Moulds (WR), Mario Williams (DE), and Mike Flanagan
(C) all stand out in my eyes.

The Colts did a phenomenal job last year, nearly going undefeated in the
regular season. Edgerrin James was a huge loss to the offense of the Colts,
but they picked up Joseph Addai in the draft to help counter that loss.
Peyton Manning is still one of the top QBs in the league and has great
targets at wide receiver. On defense, the Colts were one of the best last
year. If you're looking to add a top defender, I'd look at the secondary.

Byron Leftwich and Fred Taylor are both solid in their position, but the
offense could use a big receiver. Jimmy Smith's retirement was a big blow
to their passing game. On defense, the Jaguars are among the best. They
are solid at each position.
