1.Enemies and Hazards
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
Deranged Villagers|
-------------------
Deranged villagers are the first enemies you encounter in the game. They like to work in
groups, but can be easily subdued if individual members are isolated. Yet solo, some of
them will put up a fight"especially if armed with a tool or weapon.
-------------------
Bomb-Throwers |
-------------------
Unfortunately, some enemies carry, and throw, more than farm tools; there's also dynamite
to deal with. Dynamite-throwers can be among some of deadliest foes in the game, and the
most helpful. If dynamite is thrown your way, you have two options: one, shoot it out of the
air before it gets too close; or, two, run away. Dynamite throwers are sitting ducks while
holding lit dynamite, because of you can knock them down long enough for the fuse to hit
the source, they'll be destroyed along with enemies standing nearby.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.The Mob Rules
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taking out isolated enemies is one thing; against a pack, everything changes. If several
enemies attack at once, run away; if you're cornered and have a grenade, shotgun, or
other powerful weapon, use it.
Knock them off Ledges: If you hit an enemy in the leg while they're standing near the
edge of a ledge, they'll fall off. If they fall to the ground, they'll be stunned, giving
you time to run over and finish them off.
-------------------
Booby Traps |
-------------------
Villagers may be nuts, but they're somewhat crafty in setting primitive traps. Here are a few
of the nastier ones.
-------------------
Bear Traps |
-------------------
Bear traps are particularly annoying. If Leon steps on one, he's temporarily immobilized
and loses a little health. The annoying feature of bear traps is they're difficulty to
spot"especially in bushes and other plant life. They're also placed indoors and in places
you'd least expect, such as immediately around corners and close to walls. You can disarm a
bear trap by shooting it or swiping it with the Combat Knife.
-------------------
Explosives |
-------------------
Occasionally you encounter two bundles of dynamite strapped to trees with a cord running
from one to the other. Guess what happens if the cord is broken? Boom, you are knocked over
and take heavy damage. You can disarm these types of explosives by destroying either bundle
with firearms, but they can be used to your advantage, too, as it's easy to lure enemies into
these stereo blast traps.
-------------------
Chainsaw Dude |
-------------------
The loon with the chainsaw is a completely different problem than the other villagers"if
you hear him, immediately find out where he is because he can saw Leon's head off with a
single swipe. He can be killed, though: with several shotgun blasts or grenades. Once he's
defeated, he drops an awesome prize that can be sold to the Merchant for big money.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.Nature
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
Birds |
-------------------
If you wanna make big money, look for birds and shoot them down. Birds actually drop coins
that you can use to purchase stuff from the Merchant. Using a silencer is ideal; if you
don't have one, take your shots at long range so they don't hear you and fly away.
-------------------
Fish |
-------------------
Fish are excellent sources of nutrition. You can kill fish with firearms, but the most
effective way is to use grenades.
-------------------
Chickens |
-------------------
When you encounter chickens, don't kill them. Chickens lay eggs that can be used in
place of healing items such as herbs. Eggs are also ideal items because they don't
take up too much space in your inventory.
-------------------
Snakes |
-------------------
Snakes drop eggs when you kill them, but they can also bite so keep on your guard.
Snakes are also in swamp areas, so make sure and look for them there.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.Survival Tactics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
Weapons and Ammo |
-------------------
You start the game with the Pistol Combat Knife, but there are plenty more weapons and
various pieces of ammunition to be found. One rule you should always remember: always
keep your weapons fully reloaded. Whenever there is a break in the action, take a minute
and make sure each firearm is completely full.
-------------------
Combat Knife |
-------------------
The Combat Knife is used to open boxes and take out enemies"primarily at a last resort.
-------------------
Handgun |
-------------------
The Handgun is one of the weakest weapons. It's good for shooting down crows, breaking crates
and barrels, and knocking enemies off ledges, but for sheer killing power, you need to fire
several rounds. This too comes equipped with a red laser-sight to pinpoint targets.
-------------------
Shotgun |
-------------------
A pump-action shotgun that's very effective at close range, but it diminishes at
longer distances. The Shotgun can also blow holes in doors and is good for pushing back
mobs of enemies. This too comes equipped with a red laser-sight to pinpoint targets.
-------------------
Rifle |
-------------------
When sniping at long distances is called for, there's no better weapon than the
Rifle"especially when equipped with the optional Scope. The Rifle is bolt-action, so there's
a brief pause to manually chamber each successive round of ammunition.
-------------------
Rocket Launcher |
-------------------
When all else fails and you need an edge, the Rocket Launcher is the way to go.
This big-bang item is an expensive, one-shot disposable (no reloading) that
should be used at medium to long range. Any closer distance and Leon takes damage.
-------------------
TMP |
-------------------
The TMP can be equipped with an optional Stock that improves accuracy and absorbs recoil.
Despite its rapid firepower, the TMP is a weak weapon and is only good for picking away at enemies.
It comes equipped with a red laser-sight to pinpoint targets.
-------------------
HEAD B |
-------------------
Handheld Explosives
In addition to firearms, there are several handheld explosives to be found.
-------------------
Flash Grenade |
-------------------
The Flash Grenade temporarily stuns enemies by blinding them with a bright flash of light.
-------------------
Hand Grenade |
-------------------
Grenades explode and send enemies flying in different directions.
-------------------
Incendiary Grenade|
-------------------
Incendiary Grenades set things on fire and stop enemies where they stand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Techniques
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------
Shoot Weapons Out of the Air|
-----------------------------
Some enemies are armed with throwing knives and other sharp-edged projectiles that can be
picked out of the air with well-aimed round from the Pistol or other firearm. Be warned,
though: if you shoot away an incoming blade, the thrower will usually reach behind himself
and pull out another one to throw.
-----------------------------
Drop 'Em and Pop 'Em |
-----------------------------
One key technique to take out attacking villagers is to knock them on the ground and then
shoot them in the head until it explodes. This can be done with something as weak as a pistol,
although the shotgun yields more "immediate" results. One rule of thumb: always save your
stronger weapons unless you absolutely need them. When a loon approaches, shoot them in the
foot"so they fall to the ground with their head toward you. Then, repeatedly fire at the head;
it should explode after about five shots"long before they can even begin to get to their feet.
-----------------------------
Barricades |
-----------------------------
Leon is frequently chased into various houses and rooms in the early stages of the game.
Some of these areas have dressers and bookshelves, but these are no simple pieces of furniture;
Leon can push them against doors, windows, and other entrances in order to keep intruders out.
To see if something can be pushed, stand on either side of it and see if the onscreen "Push" prompt
appears.
-----------------------------
Locked Doors |
-----------------------------
Any door that has a visible lock on it can be blown off the door with a round from any firearm.
What's behind that door? In Resident Evil 4, you never know who"or what"might be lurking on the
other side of a closed door. Stand in front of a closed door, and wait for the "Open" prompt to
appear onscreen; tap A rapidly to kick open the door. Anything on the opposite side of the door
will be kicked away when the door flies open. It's usually a good idea to kick any closed door
open rather than open it slowly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inventory
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another new addition to the Resident Evil world is the inventory screen that's a large
grid. Only a limited items fit in that grid, so you must be selective in what you collect and
where you place it. One of the key upgrades is the Attach" Case"make sure you buy it
as soon as you can.
-----------------------------
Items |
-----------------------------
Items are dropped from defeated enemies, but they are also found inside crates and
barrels. If you aren't in a hurry, use the Combat Knife to break open such items and save
your ammunition. One warning: Be careful when breaking open small boxes: Some of
them have snakes inside of them that bite. After smashing a box open, stay on your
guard"if there is a snake inside, you have a few seconds to strike it before it strikes you.
-----------------------------
Downed Enemies: Dead or Not?|
-----------------------------
Just because an enemy falls to the ground after taking three rounds doesn't mean that he's
finished"he could be waiting for his second wind and continue to attack. To determine if
a downed enemy is alive or not, point any weapon with a red laser sight at him. If a red
dot forms when the laser is on him, he's still active; if not, he's finished.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Resident Evil Economics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------
Dealing with the Merchant |
-----------------------------
The Merchant is a key character in the game: not only does
he sell weapons, but he can also upgrade them"all for a price. You can also sell weapons
and treasure to the Merchant for cash. The Merchant appears at various different points
throughout your journey. One caveat"don't shoot the Merchant; if you do, he will be
gone from the location where he is killed for good.
-----------------------------
Treasures |
-----------------------------
Treasures can be found almost anywhere"in barrels, from dead animals and
enemies, and even on the walls of caves. Gems that are lodges in walls can be shaken
loose by rounds fired from the Pistol.
-----------------------------
Blue Gems |
-----------------------------
In certain areas you can find blue gems dangling by strings from buildings
and other structures. If you shoot a certain number of these dangling objects, you can
claim a prize at the Merchant.
-----------------------------
Lanterns |
-----------------------------
Hanging lanterns are another source of potential treasure. When you enter an
area, shoot the source of any illumination. Not only are you usually rewarded with
treasure, but dimming the lights allows any nearby diamonds sparkle, and thus let you see
their location.
