Some require only money, others require a quest along with the gold. Save the wonder: read this guide. +==============================================================================+ | Houses...............................................................04-00 | +==============================================================================+ So, you got this far, eh? *looks above* Okay, nevermind. Anyway, Bethesda decided to make it possible for a player to own a house in Oblivion, unlike in Morrowind where you basically killed the owner and took whatever house you want. That doesn't work here. Not only will you probably get fined, but anything you store in the house is subject to removal at any time, no notification given to you at all. Dang. So, now you have to buy a house. Where to begin? How about the cheapest. +==============================================================================+ | Imperial City........................................................04-01 | +==============================================================================+ This is actually a shack. Nothing much. Still, it costs 2,000 gold. Woah. I'll paste from my other guide the steps you need to do to get the house: Start his quest (yes, it's actually a quest) by talking to Vinicia Melissaeia in the Office of Imperial Commerce in the Market District. Ask about "Buy a House in Town" and she'll tell you about the 2,000 gold shack in the Waterfront. Accept and pay the 2,000 and the house is yours. Take a visit to your new house. Kinda bare, eh? Now you have to go to Three Brothers' Trade Goods in the Market District to buy furnishings. They cost about 660 each and there are about five sets. If you have the gold, deck your new house out. Easy. Now you have a pimped out shack on the Waterfront. Useful once you finish the Thieve's Guild quests and can dump stolen goods there. Anyway, I digress. Moving on. +==============================================================================+ | Bravil...............................................................04-02 | +==============================================================================+ You buy this house by talking to Count Terentius at the castle. May need to raise his dispostion. Once you buy the ugly little thing for 4,000 gold, you can purchase all the niceties at The Fair Deal. They cost about the same as the ones from Imperial City. +==============================================================================+ | Anvil................................................................04-03 | +==============================================================================+ I started this one by talking to Huurwen in the Fighter's Guild and asking about "Rumors." Probably works on other townsfolk as well. Anyway, the quest is that this guy named Velwyn Benirus is trying to sell his house, cheap. You have to find him at The Count's Arms, an inn in town. Talk to the guy and you learn that he's selling the house straight up for 5000 gold, no questions asked. With the quest title named like so, it makes me think the place is haunted. Hmmm. Guess I'll just have to go on a klepto run and get myself another 3000 gold. That done, purchase the house. After getting the deed, go to sleep for any amount of time you see fit. In any order, you'll be attacked by ghosts. Kill them (is that possible, really?). The dialogue says you heard a crash downstairs, so go investigate. There will be an urn on the floor in the front room of the house with a journal and skeletal hand. Grab both, being sure to take them. You'll need them. Now to find Velwyn. He's skipped town, you learn from anyone at the Count's Arms. Make the journey to the Elven Garden District in Imperial City and find Velwyn. Talk to him, mentioning the haunting and blah blah blah. He reads the note and discovers that he is needed to lift the curse, so the goes back to Anvil. You should too. Meet Velwyn at the Count's Arms and talk to him. He'll head off to the Manor and you should follow. Enter and fight off any ghosts you encounter, making yoru way to the bowels of the basement. Velwyn will play around with the weird symbols on the wall and the promptly run away when the door opens. Figures. Enter and save in front of the altar. Activate the altar and Grandpa Benirus will talk. Activate his body to add the skeletal hand to it (told you it would come in handy!). Joke's on you. The body comes to life and you have to fight it. Kill it to lift the curse on Benirus Manor. That done, go and talk to Velwyn. He's off to the Imperial City now that all his loose ends are tied. Enjoy your home. +==============================================================================+ | Leyawiin.............................................................04-04 | +==============================================================================+ Talk to Count Marius Caro at the Castle and buy this one for 7,000. Pimp it out with upgrades from Best Goods and Guarantees. They cost about 1,000 each. Wow. Expensive for that piece of junk. +==============================================================================+ | Bruma................................................................04-05 | +==============================================================================+ Talk to the Countess Marina Carvain and she'll sell it to you for 10,000 gold. Buy furnishings at Novaroma for around 1,100 gold each. +==============================================================================+ | Cheydinhal...........................................................04-06 | +==============================================================================+ Talk to Count Indarys (yet another Count) to purchase this house for a whopping 15,000 gold. I love the Cheydinhal architecture, so it didn't hurt me so much :-P Anyway, furnish it by visiting Borba's Goods and buying the upgrades for around 1,500 each. +==============================================================================+ | Chorrol..............................................................04-07 | +==============================================================================+ If you have 13 renown (fame minus infamy) and 20,000 gold, buy this house from Countess Volga. Be ready to shell out some major dough - the furnishings cost well over the base cost of the house. Yikes. +==============================================================================+ | Skingrad.............................................................04-08 | +==============================================================================+ Last but not least is the 25,000 house in Skingrad. Space must be a premium there, I tell you. Talk to the Count's butler Shum gro-Yarug, as the Count is to haughty to talk to us puny mortals. You need to have your disposition above 70 and at least 15 renown (fame minus infamy) before he'll talk to you about it. Deck it out at Colovian Traders by talking to Gunder. The furnishings cost a whopping 2,300 to 2,500 each! There are two side quests to this house. One is to get a maid (why not, you're royalty if you can afford this thing) and another little quest. Once you get the Servant's Quarters upgrade, reenter Colovian Traders (not sure what time if it makes a difference). Eyja will bring up working for you if you pay her 150 gold. She gives food and drink on demand after you get the Kitchen Upgrade. For the other, enter the main bedroom and pause. See the desk to your left? Look directly above it. See the ledge on the top of the wall? Jump up there. You might have to go from desk to bookshelf to get there. Anyway, you'll find an old scroll, which you should read. It tells you of a treasure hidden somewhere in the house. Go to the basement. See the support with the garlic hanging on it? The treasure is on one of the triangular braces in an hourglass. Activate the loot and you will get your reward. +==============================================================================+ | Contact Information..................................................05-00 | +==============================================================================+ GameFAQs s/n: Idiosyncrat Email: scythe [at] xbcx [dot] com Please have "Buyable Houses Guide" in the first part of the title so it sticks out for me.
