This is currently [Version 0.60] of El Greco's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Survival Handbook.

  * Please note that this is a work in progress. There is a lot of
information to cover and I will do my best to get to all of it in due
     time.

  * Have a contribution? Don't hesitate to send it in. I will accept most
submissions sent in to me as long as I can understand what you are
saying. To make sure I get it right explain it in full-detail before
     sending it my way.

  * I regularly scan the game board for any information that I may find
useful. Chances are that if it was posted on the board then I have most
likely seen it. I will post a message in any topic that I take
information from so if you find some information that you think I don't
have then send me an e-mail.

  * I normally don't say this but I have been getting quite a few e-mails
regarding topics already discussed in the guide. I understand that you
need help but the answers can be found in the guide. PLEASE look through
the guide before contacting me. I put my e-mail in so that you can
contact me if you don't find the answer. It should be used only for
contributions and a last resort for help.

--- WHAT'S NEW? (Version History) ----
-----------------------------------------

Version 0.60 | December 16, 2004 | 274 kb

Walkthrough completed! Whew! Now I'm going to take a well deserved break and
rest up so that I can...ah screw it. Who am I kidding. I'll be back in a few
days with yet another update!

Version 0.50 | December 13, 2004 | 252 kb

Completed the walkthrough up until the re-entrance of Graznyj Grad. I also
tweaked some formatting here and there in the guide. I also added in some
things to the appendices to make them slightly more informative. I'll be
working on the appendices in full once I get the walkthrough done. By the next
update I'll try and have the entire walkthrough completed.

Version 0.35 | December 10, 2004 | 216 kb

I completed the walkthrough up until the fight with The End. When will I
update next? I'm not sure, depends on how much motivation some of you fools
have sapped from me by sending me so many dim-witted e-mails.

Version 0.26 | December 6, 2004 | 199

I removed some things due to certain complications that I won't go into right
now. Consider this a de-update or something like that.

Version 0.25 | December 3, 2004 | 204 kb

Sorry for the delay but I had quite a bit of homework to do and a long power
outage two days ago. I've resumed my normal pace and I've gotten up to the
battle with The Fear. I've added in a load of reader submissions as well as
fixing numerous errors that were found in the guide.

Version 0.20 | November 29, 2004 | 179 kb

Some new reader submissions and a bit more walkthrough. I'm getting too many
e-mails about things already in the guide. READ THE ****ING GUIDE, NITWITS!

Version 0.18 | November 27, 2004 | 161 kb

Ugh, I was having some problems getting my walkthrough off the laptop and onto
the computer I use for everything else. The floppy disk drive crapped out on
me so I had to figure out how to transfer the files with a USB cable. Got it
working fine, at least for now. Anyways, in this update I added in a Search
String, added in some camos, a good amount of fan submissions, and a few new
areas of walkthrough.

Version 0.15 | November 25, 2004 | 143 kb

Thanks to the dozen or so people that e-mailed me about how great this guide
is. In this update I have completed the weapons info, added in some of the
first camouflages in the game, completed the items section, and added in some
boss strategies. The Frequently Asked Questions section has been updated for
the first time, it now contains most of the questions I have been bombarded
with about both the gameplay and the story. I have also added in a plot
summary for MGS and MGS2 submitted by Grant Gordin (futuresuperstar). Next
update should contain some boss strategies as well as some new walkthrough.

Version 0.10 | November 23, 2004 | 88 kb

The walkthrough covers Operation Virtuous Mission in its entirety. There are
a few partially completed appendices as well. More updates to come soon.

==============================================================================

Understandably, many gamers were dissapointed in the days following the
release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty because they had all been duped
by the creator of the series into thinking that they were going to be playing
as Solid Snake for the entirety of the game. On the horrfiying contrary, they
found themselves controlling an effeminate newbie called Raiden. Fans of the
series were in shock, how could this be possible? Many promptly lost their
faith in the series and moved on to playing inferior substitutes such as
Splinter Cell :P

However, there were people who were drawn in by the convoluted storyline and
perhaps some of the best gameplay ever to garce a gaming console. The fans
that suck around for the next installation have been rewarded with a
masterpiece. And just like that masterpiece of a game, this FAQ will be one
to treasure forever as one of those truly moving experiences. You will be
taken for a long and winding ride as I explain the intricacies of walking
around and navigating the menus. Once I have accomplished that I will boggle
your brain by taking you step by step through each moment of the game.

Hm...I'm gpoing to stop trying to sound important. Basically, this FAQ is
meant to help you get out of just about any jam that you get into. I'll also
be explaining just about every minor detail about how the game works how it
should be played, what you can do in the game, and anything else that I can
throw in. I'm hoping for a completely comprehensive guide for the game and I
did it just for you guys, don't you feel special?

Please take note that this is not at all a story-synopsis or a character FAQ,
if you have any story related questions then I am not the person to ask. You
may direct your questions to the message boards, to your friends, your
goldfish, or any of the other FAQ writers that have covered this game as long
as it is not me. This guide is strictly about the gameplay of Metal Gear
Solid 3: Snake Eater. There is --some-- story related materials in here but I
try to keep it at a bare minimum.

If you are still reading at this point then I would like to say that I
appreciate you taking the time to look at my guide and I sincerely hope that
you enjoy reading it and find it of the most use.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or contributions to make
then you can e-mail me at the address provided below. I will only accept
questions, comments, suggestions, and contributions if they abide by the
guidelines outlined below. I do not think that I am asking much by doing
that, but if you do have a problem with that then I ask you just not send me
anything at all. i understand that this makes me seem a bit anal but when you
get as many e-mails as I do you can't afford to deal with stuff you don't want
to.

The controls in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are complex. Almost every
button has a different function depending what item you have equipped, your
position (crawling, against a wall), or any other circumstance. They are very
context sensitive. This section that immediately follows will provide you
with a basic outline of what each button can do and then the next few sections
after that will detail how to do each of those and some special actions and
such.

 --- RADAR ------------------

Unlike in previous Metal Gear Solid games this game does not default to the
usual Soliton Radar that we have come to know and love. Instead we now have a
battery powered mechanical radar that picks up everything that is living
around you. That means frogs, birds, snakes, and so on will all appear on
your radar. Be careful with this since you may get into some trouble either
running for your life from a frog or running out of battery power and not being
able to use it at all.

 --- GUAGES ------------------

 Life Gauge
------------

This is the one gauge that you will want to watch closest for the entire game.
This gauge represents Snake's life. The more of it that is filled up the more
life he has, the lower it is the less life he has. This gauge can be restored
by using Rations or by crouching while bleeding.

When the Life Gauge reaches a low enough point, Snake will begin to bleed. It
will steadily decrease over time until it eventually runs out and Snake dies.
To prevent this horrible tragedy Snake must either crouch for a while so that
it will slowly restore, use a Bandage to stop the bleeding, or using a
Ration to recover some of his health.

Please note that smoking Cigars will slowly but surely decrease Snake's Life
Gauge, but it will only deplete it to the point where he will begin to bleed.
Once it reaches that point it will stop depleting health.

 Stamina Gauge
---------------

This gauge shows how much energy Snake has left. The higher his Stamina bar
is the more energy he has and the better he will perform in combat and other
situations. This bar is decreased by almost everything that you do: walking,
running, climbing, hanging, and so on. Once he gets down to the last 1/4 of
the bar his performance will become very impaired and many things will become
difficult to do: running, stalking, climbing, aiming and so on.

You will want this to be in the top 3/4 most of the time. You can save
yourself some of the bar by thinking ahead and performing actions that are
essential and nothing else. The bar can be recovered quite easily though as
long as you have some food for Snake to munch on. Certain foods will give him
more stamina than others but all will give some sort of contribution.

 Grip Gauge
------------

This only appears when Snake is hanging off of a ledge or railing. As soon as
Snake enters Hanging Mode the gauge will appear on screen. As it decreases
Snake will gradually lose his grip on the surface he is holding onto. When it
reaches zero Snake will fall. He may or may not die or lose health depending
upon how high up he is. If you do not wish for him to fall then you want to
get him back up onto a solid surface by pressing the "Action Button".

Please note that the duration of the grip gauge also depends upon how much
stamina Snake has. The less he has the faster the gauge will drop and vice
versa.

--- ENEMY TACTICS AND INTELLIGENCE ------------------

The jump made in enemy intelligence from the last game is almost comparable to
that mede between MGS and MGS2. In MGS3 the enemies have recieved a whole new
array of tactics and decisions to take you out with speed and precision. If
you think I am saying this in pure jest you may go and try to outwit the
guards yourself. Not easy, is it?

The enemy in this game will flank, use suppressing fire, flush you out with
grenades, take cover, back eachother up and so on. Think you can sit behind
that tree forver? Think again. The enemy will most likely toss a grenade in
your direction to either kill you or flush you out of hiding. They succeed a
surprising amount of times when they do this.

Also take note that the enemy will not simply stop firing at you if you have
one of their comrades taken hostage. They will circle around, cut off your
exits, attack you with a knife, and maybe even sacrifice their comrade to kill
you.

Basically, expect the enemy to be smarter than the average bear, as Yogi likes
to say. They behave and act and perform just like a well-trained soldier and
unit. Don't_underestimate_them.

 --- ALERT MODES ------------------

Unlike in previous Metal Gear games as soon as you alert a guard or make him
suspicious you will be in Alert or Caution mode, depending upon what you did
to alert the guard. When either of the modes start there will by a timer that
counts down to zero. If you are in Caution mode and the timer reaches zero
the game will go back to normal. If you are in alert mode then the game will
drop down to evasion and then caution and then back to normal once each of the
respective timers has fully counted down.

 --- RADIO ------------------

Unlike in the first two Metal Gear Solid games Snake must now communicate with
his allies via a field radio (as opposed to the nanotech Codec). The radio
will allow him to dial into specific frequencies to contact certain people.
When a person is reached a picture of them will pop up on screen and Snake and
the character will converse.

The radio can be used to find things out about certain characters, plants,
animals, survival techniques and so on. It is pretty much an information
database at your fingertips.

Different frequencies will contact different people so make sure you are on
the right frequency before transmitting. It is not, however, necessary to
memorize all the frequencies by yourself. There is a small options screen
below the main interface where you can select a previously used frequency so
that you don't have to remember it or constantly dial it in.

There are also some special fequencies in the game that will open various
doors or do other things for you. Some might cancel an alert mode, some might
play some elevator music.

 --- CURE SYSTEM ------------------

Face it, you're bound to get shot or take a frew hits at some point in this
game. Thankfully Metal Gear Solid 3 implements a nifty new system for you to
take action and heal yourself. You can extract bullets, wrap wounds, set
bones, and use an anti-venom serum in case you are bitten by one of the snakes
in the game. How can you do this? Well read on...

 --- DIFFICULTY MODES ------------------

For those of you non-hardcore (or hardcore) gamers out there, Metal Gear
Solid 3: Snake Eater features five different difficulty modes for you to
test your skillz on.

You will be asked to select a difficulty mode whenever you start a new game,
or continue a game that has been fully completed. You will be presented with
four or five options depending upon whether or not you have alredy beaten
the game. If this is your first playthrough you will only have Very Easy,
Easy, Normal, and Hard available. If you are playing through a second time
then you will be presented with all of the options: Very Easy, Easy, Normal,
Hard, and Extreme available for your pleasure... or displeasure.

  * Very Easy * I must say that this is very, very easy. Guards can't hear
much of anything, they are nearly blind, they die easily, there is far less
of them, and they are quite unintelligent. The bosses pretty much fall under
the same category. They take a lot of damage from you and do little to you.
If you leave an area with the alarm hooting it will be turned off when you
enter another. Cautions and alerts last for a very short time. This
difficulty is not difficult at all.

  * Easy * A little bit tougher than Very Easy but it is still very
unchallenging. Guards can see a little bit further, hear better, and so on.
Once gain in this difficulty the alarm will be reset upon entering a new area.
Everything is just slightly harder but overall it is still pretty damned easy.

  * Normal * This is where you should start if Snake Eater is your first
Metal Gear Solid game. Everything is pretty well balanced here for any
player. It isn't too hard and it isn't easy either. Guards can see somewhat
well and hear better than the lower difficulties. If you have an alert in one
area and enter another it will stay. This is also the difficulty the
walkthrough section is based upon.

  * Hard * For those of you who are hardcore Metal Gear Solid fans. This is
the difficulty I played through on my first time through the game. There
seems to be a big jump in difficulty between Normal and Hard. The bosses do
much more damage and you do less to them. Guards work the same way. There
are many more guards, they can see, hear, and make better decisions. This is
also for people who are looking for a challenge but not an incredibly hard
one. This is also the difficulty the walkthrough section is based upon.

  * Extreme * This is a smashing difficulty level. "Smashing" as in it will
induce wild fits of rage that will send you smashing everything in sight. This
mode is incredibly realistic. Three shots from a guard and you are dead, if
you are in their line of sight across a large room they will spot you easily,
they have excelelnt hearing, they aren't complete dumbasses when it comes to
capturing you, and there are many more guards in each room. Bosses deal out
one hit kills or something very close to that. In other words: this is only
for the possessed or insane.

The difficulty levels differ in these ways,

 - The amount of damage done when falling from a high distance
 - duration of stamina guage and grip guage
 - eyesight of guards
 - hearing ability of guards
 - intelligence of guards
 - length of caution mode/evasion/alert mode
 - damage done by bosses/guards
 - damage you do to bosses/guards
 - amount of time guards stay knocked out/tranquilized
 - number of assault team members
 - accuracy of guards
 - how much cold exposure for your character to catch a cold
 - availability of items and ammo
 - amount of trembling when sniping
 - tranquilizer effect time
 - stamina restored when eating
 - Your backpack storage space

[02ACTN]

 --- BASIC MOVEMENT ------------------

I probably don't have to explain this but I guaruntee that if I don't I will
get an e-mail asking about this. Whenever you want to move your character
around in this game you must use the left analog stick or the directional pad.
The direction of the stick or pad will correspobnd to the on-screen movement
of the character

 --- STAND / PRONE ------------------

There is a very small change in this system from other MGS games. In this
game you can hold down the X button while standing and Snake will go straight
to the prone position. Tapping it (like usual) will just bring Snake to a
crouching position. If you want to go from prone to a standing position hold
down X instead of tapping it and Snake will stand up immediately.

--- FIRST PERSON VIEW ATTACK ------------------

This allows you to attack enemies while in the first person view. This makes
shooting at far away a lot easier. You can shoot handguns, assault
rifles, use the survival knife, and use fist attacks with the first person
view.

 --- CORNER MODE ------------------

Flatten yourself against the wall near a corner to enter Corner View. This
will allow you to see things that are behind the corner without exposing
yourself to the enemy.

 --- CLIMBING OBJECTS ------------------

Press the action button in front of any waist high object to climb on top of
it. Some objects Snake will automatically climb onto if they are low enough
to the ground. Such as the bombed out floors in Rassvet.

 --- ROLL FORWARDS ------------------

Rolling is essentially a forward diving somersault (not a backflip). The
rolling manuever can be used for several different things. It can be used as
a dodging manuever (trying to avoid gunshots or otherwise). It can be used to
move silently over noisy metal grates, this way is faster than walking so it
is the preferential way to go over them. Or it can be used to knock over
enemy attackers or unsuspecting guards.

Personally, I use the rolling manuever to tackle sentries and move them out of
my way. This is good because once they have been hit they will be very, very
disoriented for a while, giving you ample time to do your dirty work. Be
aware though that if you do knock somebody over they will attack you or call
for backup if you are in the general area. Make sure you deal with them once
you knock them over.

 --- DRAGGING ENEMIES ------------------

Once you have a guard in a chokehold you may not wish to immediately dispose
of him. Perhaps you wish to drag him to another spot or something like that.
If that is the case then just keep holding down SQUARE and move along with the
Analog Stick. Snake will walk backwards slowly and drag the guard along with
him. If the guard is held long enough he will start to break out of it. If
he does do this then Snake will begin to lose his grip on the guard. Just
quickly tap SQUARE again to regain your hold on him. Once you have him in
whichever place you want you may do whatever devious things you have in mind.

Once you have killed a guard in whatever manner you choose he will be lying on
the ground in plain sight (most of the time). To avoid them danged alert
modes or caution modes you will have to hide the body somewhere where it will
not be found easily. To do this simply walk up to any deceased guard with no
weapon equipped, press SQUARE, and hold it. Once you have done that you may
drag him wherever you wish.

 --- HANGING ------------------

If you want to hang from a tree branch just walk out along the top of the
branch and press the Action button to hang down. When you are hanging you can
press the directional buttons to move along the branch or use R2 and L2. Drop
down by pressing X. If you want to shoot at guards while hanging from a branch
then just go into FPV and push the wepon button to draw a weapon. Just shoot
normally once you rae in FPV.

You can also hang from the rope bridge and a few rock ledges but you cannot
shoot from these.

 --- CHOKEHOLD ------------------

Without your weapon equipped come up behind a guard and press the CIRCLE button.
Your character will now grab him around the neck to temporarily immobilize him.
Once he is in the choke hold you can either snap his neck, knock him out, or
leave him. To snap his neck rapidly press the weapon button to snap his neck,
you will hear a quite distinct, and disturbingly pleasing, "SNAP!" If you
prefer not to take his life you can press the weapon button about 9 or ten
times to cause him to lose consciousness.

 --- PEEK AROUND CORNER ------------------

When in corner view use the shoulder buttons L2 and R2 to peek around the
corner to get a better view of the area. You can use the right analog stick
now to move the camera around to see more detail.

 --- STEP SIDEWAYS ------------------

While in FPV you can use the shoulder buttons L2 and R2 to strafe or step
sideways in either direction. This will allow you hide behind corners and
step out quickly to shoot in the First Person.

 --- KNOCKING ------------------

This is one of the best distractions you can use in this game. Knocking is
basically what it says. It is just a knock on a surface to create a noise
that will attract the attention of the enemy. Knocking is done when your
character is leaning against a wall or some other flat surface and you press
CIRCLE (the CQC button) and Snake will rap his fist on the wall. This will
attract the attention of any nearby guard and he will come to investigate the
noise. This will give you a chance to slip into the shadows and strike from
a place of your choosing while he stands in the open looking around. If
taking the guard out is not your intention then you can use this to draw him
out of your way so that you can proceed unheeded to wherever you are going.

 --- TACTICAL RELOAD ------------------

This is an essential technique to master for this game. Quick change is
essentially where you can very quickly switch between two weapons or items
(or from a weapon to no weapon quickly). A quick-change is done by quickly
tapping down on either the L2 or R2 buttons.

Any quick change using a magazine type weapon will automatically reload the
magazine with all the bullets inserted so that you don't have to waste time
changing magazines. Just quickly tap down on the R2 button twice in a row and
you will have done it.

 --- JUMP-OUT SHOT ------------------

You have been spotted by the enemy and are now engaged in a high intensity
shootout with an attack team. You are bleeding badly and in need of help.
Situation sound familiar?

What you would need to use here is a jump out shot. Get behind a box or
another hard surface such as a wall and move to the corner. With a weapon
equipped press the weapon button "A" and Snake will quickly jump out fire a
shot and get back behind the wall. This method of shooting is also accurate.
When Snake jumps out he will usually hit an enemy on the first shot, and
sometimes in a vital area such as the groin or head.

If you wish to fire multiple shots you will have to rapidly press the weapon
button once Snake is out in the open or else he will just go back to hiding.

 --- SHAKE-OUT ITEM ------------------

This is done when you have either knocked out a guard or killed him in any
way. The guard will be lying on the ground so if you wish you can have Snake
pick him up. If you do pick him up you can either drag him around or shake
down his body for items and ammunition. To shake a guard down all you have
to do is pick him up and repeatedly drop him until things start to fall out
from his person. He will drop any number of items and ammunition and the
amount that he drops will depend on the difficulty level that you are playing
on.

 --- DESTROY RADIO ------------------

With any gun you can shoot a guards radio and this will permanently disable it
and he will no longer be able to communicate via radio. When a guard has
discovered you can shoot his radio while he is making the report or before
he does, giving you more time to get away. You can only do this in FPV.

 --- CLIMBING LADDERS ------------------

Ladders, well... there isn't much to say about them. There are very few in
the game and they are few and far in-between. The only explanation that is
needed is that they transport you either straight up or straight down. To get
on a ladder just go up to it, push the action button, and then use the D-Pad
or the Analog Stick to move up and down. You can't fall off of a ladder so
don't worry about that, you will stay on until you either reach the top or
bottom of it

 --- DODGING BULLETS ------------------

This is somewhat useless but if you can pull it off then you will be able to
save yourself some health. Basically what this involves is a gunfight (you
have to be shot at to dodge bullets) and you in FPV. When a guard shoots at
you it may be possible to move to the side with the R2 and L2 buttons or to
duck and evade the bullets. It isn't completely foolproof by any means but it
does work on occasion so it is worth a try.

 --- BOOKS ------------------

These little pieces of literature can be placed on the ground to attract the
undivided attention of the enemy. These graphic novels contain pictures of
scantily clad women and other interesting images such as that. If an
unsuspecting guard happens to stumble upon your little stash then he will
instantly drop to his knees and begin to browse through it, ignoring all of
his important duties. All that you have to do is lay it in his path or within
his sight range, when he sees it he will go over to investigate and then do
what I just described. Very useful and humorous to use.

 --- CARDBOARD BOXES ------------------

I hope you have heard at least something about this by now. If you haven't
heard anything about this then I don't know what to say except to listen up!
Starting in Metal Gear Solid (1998) there was a small (kind of) gag that
involved hiding inside of a cardboard box to evade your enemies. The same
thing has been implemented into Snake Eater, much to my delight.

Using a box is very simple. All you have to do is equip it and Snake will
immediately hide inside, out of view from enemy sentries. If the enemy has
not seen you get into the box or you are not sitting right in the middle of
their patrol route then they will not come over to investigate. However if
they are in an Alert mode they will most likely pick up the box to see what
is inside it. They_aren't_complete_dumbasses.

In Snake Eater there are three different boxes. Each serves the same purpose,
to hide from the enemy. Just make sure you are using it in a logical place
hence, don't use it out in the middle of the jungle. Use it indoors,
preferably next to some other boxes.

 --- LOCKERS ------------------

If you remember back to MGS2 one of the big attention grabbers of the gameplay
was that you could open up and access a locker in the game to either hide
yourself or inconspicuously toss a guard into them. Well, lucky for you this
has been implemented into Snake Eater as well.

At different places in the game there are lockers that the enemy personell use
to store various items of equipment and materials. To open one up all you
have to do is stand in front of it, try and get close, and press the Action
Button. Snake will then open up the locker. Depending upon what difficulty
you are on you may or may not find an item or some ammunition in there.

If you want to hide inside the locker all you have to do is run Snake all the
way into the locker and he will turn around, shut the door, and then he will
be completely hidden from view. This is mainly useful during clearings, alert
modes, or any other kind of situation where you have got a guard(s) looking
for you.

There are a few things you can do inside a locker despite the low
manueverability room. The majority of them are taken up by a few different
ways to look out of the little vent in the top of the locker. If you want to
see what is to the right or left of the vent then you can just press and hold
either R2 or L2 to look right or left, respectively. If you want to see what
is to the bottom of the vent then you should press both buttons together at
the same time. Pressing the R1 button will have Snake move his face up to the
vent itself and peer out. Doing this will give you a much better view of the
surrounding area. You can also duck down inside a locker, but I really do not
see any point at all to this.

To drag a body into a locker you must have the locker door open and a body
closeby. Drag the body over to the locker and then drop it. Open the locker,
and drag the body inside it as far as you can. Snake will then stand the body
up in the locker and shut the door. Now the body is safely out of sight of
any patrolling guards. Please note that an unconscious guard will never ever
wake up once he is stuffed into a locker.

If you are in dire need of a cover spot during a firefight a locker door can
be used to provide this. Simply open the door and move behind it. This will
only provide a brief moment of cover until it is blown away by th enemy
attackers. It is only a thin piece of metal so don't rely on it too much.

Now for the fun stuff. If you encounter a locked locker there are two things
you can do. The first is to move on and ignore it but that is not helpful to
you in any way so I suggest you move to the second option. The second option
is to break open the locker by knocking off the door. You can do this several
ways: punching/kicking, shooting the hinges, or blowing it off with C4. I
suggest that you do the first option since it uses less ammo and is
considerably less noisy. Once the door has been blown off the door will fall
(or to your misfortune it may fall into the locker, in which case it is still
innaccessible) away and its contents will be revealed. On a side note, make
sure you are not standing in front of the door when it falls or else Snake
will get knocked to the ground by it.

+-- CQC --+
 +--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

In actual battle, it is used in the jungle, bushes, and indoors when
you cannot use a gun. It is also used when terrorists with hostages
are in a facility or an airplane. The technique has been developed for
when you have to fight multiple enemies that are very close to you, or
when you don't know from where you will be attacked. It is a total
combat technique, studied by actual special forces, used when you are
close to enemies and you have to be able to fight with your bare hands,
     knife, and gun accordingly.

      - Motosada Mori, MGS3 Military Advisor

In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater there is an implemented combat system that
allows the player to engage an enemy or multiple enemies in a series of
movements that will disarm the opponent as well as defend the player from
damage. Used correctly, this will be most useful tool when you stray too
close to an enemy patrol or find yourself surrounded by bad guys. From here
on out Close Quarters Combat will be referred to as CQC.

 CQC Capable Weapons
---------------------

Bare Hands
Survival Knife
M1911A1
MK-22

In Metal Gear Solid 3 the above weapons can be used during CQC. Usually you
will want to go with a combination of survival knife + a handgun. You can
also go with the knife + bare hands (nothing else equipped) if that suits your
fancy.

 CQC Progression
-----------------

As you get your victim into various stages and positions during CQC you will
be able to perform a certain number of movements and as you do more of them
your options will become more and more limited. See the below explanation to
see how this works.

  * The first thing that you have to do is either sneak up to an enemy by
using the stalking mode or be in some other circumstance as long as you
are close to the guard that you wish to engage.

Now you can do one of two things.

A - Press the Circle button along with the directional stick to knock your
enemy to the ground. There are two things that you do in this position.

        1. Interrogate him with the knife.

        2. Knock him out or dispose of him in some other fashion.

B - Press and hold the Circle button to grab the enemy. Now you have a few
     options. Available options : 1, 2, 3, 4.

        1. Threaten him with your knife. To do this you must apply pressure
to the L3 button. if you release the pressure on the button the
guard will stop talking. To get him talking again just re-apply
            pressure to the L3 button.

            Next available actions : 2, 3, 4

        2. You can use the enemy as a human shield by pressing the Square
button. After this you will not be able to threaten the enemy or
interrogate him. This will, though, prevent other enemies from
attacking you. With this you will be able to engage any nearby
enemies by going into FPV and using a handgun to shoot at them.

            Next available actions : 3, 4

        3. Now you can knock the guard to the ground by pressing the Circle
button along with a direction on the analog stick. Now you can
(if alone) threaten him and have him relinquish items to you. Once
you have gotten your worth out of the guard you can eliminate him
by tranquilizing or by shooting him in some other fashion.

            Next available actions : None

        4. If you still have the guard in your grip you can cut his throat
with your knife. When you do this the guard will fall out of your
grasp and the CQC session will be over until you come across the
            next guard.

            Next available actions : None

This Walkthrough is based upon the Hard difficulty. There will be some
discrepancies between Hard and the other difficulties but for the most part
this will be universally applicable.

For reference: North will always be the top of the screen. South at the
bottom, east to the right and west to the left. Those are the basic
directions I will give so keep that in mind. I will also not tell you when to
eat your food items. That is up to you since that depends on a variety of
factors that cannot be covered in a guide like this.

Also, though I have tried to make this as accurate as possible, chances are
there are some innacuracies so please don't hesitate to correct me if there
is something blatently incorrect.

Omfg gerco what should I choose at the beginning!? Well, if this is your first
MGS game choose "This is my first MGS game." That will allow you to view some
tutorials once the game starts. Choosing "I liked MGS!" will have you play as
Snake in the opening cut-scenes and you will have the Raiden mask in your pack
for the entire game. If you choose "I liked MGS2!" you will play as Snake
with the Raiden mask in the beginning of the game. There will also be one
additional cut-scene where Snake removes his mask and stashes it in his pack.

The Virtuous Mission serves mainly as a tutorial for the entire game. It's
quite linear and quite short. It only serves to acclimate you to the gameplay
system and also introduce the story.

USELESS TRIVIA

The date for the Virtuous Mission, August 24, 1964, is Hideo Kojima's first
birthday. This date was chosen over his birthday in 1963 so that the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy could play a role in the story.

The name Major Tom was inspired by the David Bowie song "Space Oddity".

                           ++  Dremuchij South  ++
                          -------------------------

There aren't any enemies in this area or the next one so you just have to
spend your time here getting acclimated to the controls. As of now you don't
have any weapons because your backpack got snagged on a tree while you
descended.

Make your way north and crawl under the fallen trees blocking the way. Right
up ahead you will see the tree that your pack is snagged on. Climb the tree
by pressing the action button and walk out across the branch. Press Triangle
to swing down and hang on the branch to retrieve the backpack. In the
backpack is a full arsenal of weapons for you to enjoy but in the full game
you will only have a Hush Puppy and your survival knife.

After the radio conversation make your way out of this area by heading
straight up north.

There is an alternate route in this area. You can run up on the right side of
the area, going around the logs, and drop down the hill towards the tree. It
isn't much faster but it provides a little variety.

      -- Weapons --

The Hush Puppy (Mk22) and Survival Knife are stashed inside your backpack.
Retrieve the backpack from the tree to recieve these two items.

      -- Items --

At the top of the hill on the right side you can find a Life Recovery
medicine.

                       ------------------------------
                        ++  Dremuchij Swamp Land  ++
                       ------------------------------

This area is also lacking of human enemies but there are some other obstacles
for you to get past. Run up ahead following the only route available and you
will come to a large swamp that is crawling with alligators. Whip out your
Mk22 and open fire on the alligators. This will put them to sleep for a long
enough time for you to get past them. Just make sure that you don't bump into
them ebcause they will wake up and attack you. Just tranq them and move
around them. Go around either side or straight through the middle of the
swamp.

Look upwards and see if you can spot the hornet's nest that is situated on
the small island. If you shoot it down you will get a very tasty treat but
Snake will get stung quite a few times and thus lose some health. You can
shake the bees off by crossing the marsh or equipping the cigar.

When you are done here make your way to the north and into the next area.

      -- Weapons --

Search the grass on the right side for some Grenades. Watch out for the
croccodiles that are lurking nearby.

      -- Items --

You can find Ointment on the island in the middle of the swamp as well as a
Suppresser for the Mk22.

                         -------------------------
                          ++  Dremuchij North  ++
                         -------------------------

Once the cinematic is over change your camouflage to the LEAF pattern. This
will work better in this area. Move up north and off to the left side of this
area and crouch down in some grass and wait for the enemy sentry to pass by.
When he does get up and come up behind him, carefully, in stalking mode. When
you can grab him do so. What you do with him is up to you.

When the first sentry has been taken out move straight up to the north. Take
a peek around and spot the second enemy sentry. Tranq him with your Hush
Puppy so that you can get by him easily. If you went straight up north
without making any turns or taking alternate routes the pathway into the next
area will be slightly to the northeast.

On a side note (no pun intended) there is a small side area in the beginning
of the area. Move off to the right once you reach the stump in the first
clearing. There are some snakes and a few other creatures for you to kill
and eat.

      -- Weapons --

The SVD is hidden in the grass at the very end of the side area at the
beginning. There is a box of grenades inside the hollowed out tree stump in
the field to the north.

      -- Items --

If you are in the field over in the east check out the hollow log to find the
Thermal Goggles.

                           ---------------------
                            ++  Dolinovodno  ++
                           ---------------------

This area is probably where you will have the most fun since there are quite a
few things to do here. I'll leave that part up to you though. I'm just here
to get your arse through the level unscathed.

Start off by taking out the SVD and sniping the two sentries at the first part
of the bridge. If you take them out quickly enough you won't alert either of
them and you can make a clean break here.

When they are both down take a look up in the trees. What's that succulent
treat up there!? Apples! Well...it's not that exciting but you can shoot the
apples out of the tree with your pistol and gather them up to eat later. There
is also another hornet's nest up in the tree, hanging above the entrance to
the bridge.

Descend the hill and lay down on the right side of the bridge. Take out the
SVG and aim across the bridge. Take note of the two sentries and kill them
both. Cross the bridge and make your way into the next area if you do not
need any food or ammo. If you do, read the next paragraphs.

When you are heading westward along the trail that takes you to the final area
there is a small side trail that leads south. This will allow you to get
under the bridge and obtain some ammo for your pistols and a Life Recovery
medicine. You can also get the XM16E1 down here.

If you are out of food and need some stamina before pressing onwards you can
pick yourself some mushrooms by the entrance to the bridge.

      -- Weapons --

The XM16E1 can be found in the small recess in the cliff on the north end of
the rope bridge.

      -- Items --

There's a box of Pentazemin in the small recess in the cliff on the north end
of the rope bridge.

                             -----------------
                              ++  Rassvet  ++
                             -----------------

Watch the cinematic and listen to the radio transmission. When they are done
take out your SVG and move up north into the gap between the brick walls.
Snipe the two sentries outside the buildings. One is to the northeast and
another is directly north. You will have to look through some inconveniently
placed grass to snipe the second guard but if you use the thermal goggles you
can take him out without a problem.

I suggest that you take the eastern entrance for the easiest route to
Sokolov's room. Just stay outside the walls of the buildings and find the
ladder on the eastern side. When you are up on the roof drop down into the
building below and you will have a clear path to the room.

If you want to take the slightly more difficult route then make your way to
the top of the screen. When you reach the entrance of the building take a
look around and make sure that there are no sentries right ahead. Go through
the entrance and stop at the stacked boxes. When you reach this place you
will most likely be approached by an enemy sentry coming right by the stairs.
Have your gun at the ready and shoot him when he is in view.

Now go up the stairs and get behind the barrel. Push it down the stairs by
pressing the action button and it will roll down the stairs and blow up,
killing both guards in this area.

Your work here is done. Get to Sokolov's room for a cut-scene.

After the cut-scene run back into Dolinovdno to meet up with Sokolov.

If you are inclined to find out just how detailed this game is check out one
of the chains that is hanging around in this area. Shoot the shain itself and
then try to shoot through one of the little holes between the links of the
chain. Whoa!

      -- Weapons --

The M37 Shotgun is somewhat hidden in the southwest corner of the building.
Look around the boxes there.

      -- Items --

There is a Life Recovery medicine in the room to the left of where Sokolov is
being kept. There is a suppresser for the XM16E1 at the top of the stairs on
the west side.

Snake cannot move at all since his physical condition pretty much prevents him
from doing anything at all. You have to heal two broken bones and four deep

The names of the Cobra members are all taken from emotions related to battle.
You should recognize what they each represent. The Pain, The Fear, The Fury,
The End, The Sorrow, and The Joy. Coincidentally, this is also the emotion
that each of the members express when they die.

                          ------------------------

There is not much in this area for you to do besides collect some snakes to
eat, this is going to be your first chance and possibly last to get some food
without having to look over your shoulder for enemies. I suggest that you root
around in the grass for some snakes. In any case you need to head north to
the next area.

  -- Items --

None.

  -- Weapons --

The M1911A1, Directional Microphone, Survival Knife, and four Stun Grenades
are stashed inside your backpack ready for you to use.

                          -------------------------

There are some more snakes in the grass here. After you go over the crest of
the hill there will be a Python hanging from the tree. When you go a little
bit further a cut-scene will begin.

Now...you don't have a gun. I suggest that you take your time until you can
get one. Now you must sneak past a few guards. Immediately run northeast and
lean against the rise in the ground. Wait until the guards go past you and
then use the stalking mode to move further north. When you get to the
intersection move past it directly north and crouch in the grass. Look to the
northeast and you'll see a guard patrolling there. Move to the northwest and
lean up against the tree stump. Watch the guard until he is joined by another
and heads to the south, the direction you came from. There are no more guards
to bother you, assuming that you go straight to the exit from here. So get
moving.

  -- Items --

  -- Weapons --

None, you do however lose your M1911A1.

                             ++  Dolinovodno  ++
                            ---------------------

Watch the guards on the bridge until they pass each other. When one of the
guards comes over to your side he will begin to patrol around the area. Watch
him and almost immediately he will turn his back. Stalk behind him and take
him out in a manner of your choosing. Now cross the bridge, being careful not
to fall off. When you get to the other side of the bridge, hang off the edge
of it over on the left side and drop down to the branch below. Climb up and
grab the items there.

When you go to head up the path leading out of the area under the bridge stop
at the corner and watch for a guard coming down. Wait until he turns back and
then sneak up behind him and dispose of him.

If you have the chance grab some fruit from the tree in the south. That'll
come in handy later on when you need to feed yourself.

  -- Items --

There's a Life Recover underneath the rope bridge.

  -- Weapons --

There's a Smoke Grenade underneath the rope bridge.

                              -----------------
                               ++  Rassvet  ++
                              -----------------

There are no enemies here so go into Sokolov's room and head out to trigger a
cut-scene. Root around for some items first.

  -- Items --

There's a carboard box in the area to the left of Sokolov's room. You can
also find Bug Juice behind the building, to the north. The Thermal Goggles
are in the locker inside Sokolov's room.

  -- Weapons --

There's an AK-47 at the top of the stairs, behind the barrel. A smoke grenade
can be found in the area to the west of Sokolov's room, behind some boxes.

                          ------------------------
                           ++  Ocelot's Guard  ++
                          ------------------------

Assuming that you picked up the AK-47 before you entered the cut-scene this
won't be especially hard. There are a total of 9 guards to take down.

At first equip the box and wait for the guards to storm into the room. Seeing
nothing besides some furniture and a mysterious cardboard box they will move
out of the room. When they turn their backs un-equip the box and shoot
whoever you can. From there just try and take out who you can. Make sure
that you are covered well because these guys can do quite a bit of damage if
they get you in their cross-hairs.

There are a few that may be hard to spot/find. One is on the roof over
Sokolov's room, there is one to the east of him patrolling around the boxes
there, there is one all the eay in the west watching the entrance, and there
is one in the south of the area. You should have a Life Recovery to use so if
you need to use it then do so. A cut-scene will take place afetr you have
killed/tranqued/knocked out all the guards.

After the cut-scene go through the gate that was knocked open by Eva's
motorcycle.

Tip by Alen S.

The cardboard box technique you recommend here is fine for players who
don't mind killing all of the soldiers, but for Mk22 players like me, the way
to go is the trap door in the floor. Stand in front of it and press triangle.

My first time playing it, I didn't realize you could use the trap door to get
underneath the "Sokolov" room, even though I tried to use it (I wonder why it
didn't work that first time?). After messing up several times in my EXTREME
game, I used the trap door, and this greatly reduces the difficulty of this
part of the game. Maybe I'm not as good as you, but you try using the box,
then sneaking out and around then underneath the building without being seen!

Tip by Dan Fiegenblatt

Here's a strategy that works great for me. Simply to crawl under the bed. You
can either stay there until they leave, or take my approach, and chuck a stun
grenade at them. The grenade will stun them all, leaving four guards
susceptible to your gunfire while they're unconcious.

                          -----------------------
                           ++  Chynoryj Prud  ++
                          -----------------------

There are some snakes in the grassy ares on the south end of the swamp. Be
careful though, they'll bite you if you get too close. This area isn't
especially hard, all you have to do is swim to the north end of the swamp.
You just need to watch out for some crocs on your way there. They aren't too
aggressive, just don't get close to them and they'll leave you alone.

When you reach the north end of the swamp watch out for a thin brown line
streched between two trees. This is the first trap you'll encounter in the
game. If you trip the wire a log with long, deadly spikeswill come flying
through the trees and smack Snake right in the chest. Crawl under it to avoid
it, or you can shoot the wire to have it swing down and then you can walk past
it. If you do the latter just make sure that you don't walk into the trap, it
can still do a hell of a lot of damage if you do. Go for the exit.

  -- Items --

First off, the Croc Cap is loacted on a small piece of land on the north end
of the swamp. Here's how to get it: Dive underwater and hug the west edge
until you come to a passage that goes under some logs. Swim under the logs
and get onto the shore that is a short distance away. Move north a bit and
you'll find a tree that has some ivy to climb it. Climb up, hang from the
branch and shimmy along the line until you're right above another line. Drop
down to the next line and shimmy to the north. When you're over a piece of
land drop down and grab the Croc Cap.

The GA-KO camouflage is in the water at the northeast corner of the swamp.
Equip your Thermal Goggles to spot it.

  -- Weapons --

None.

                        -----------------------------
                         ++  Bolshaya Past South  ++
                        -----------------------------

Go forward to the fence. If you look carefully you will be able to see the
fence is electrified (there are parks jumping off of it). How do you get
through? Well, look over on the east side of the fence and look o the ground.
Alas! A hole! Crawl through it and stay on your belly. This area is rigged
with claymore mines and few wire-trip traps. By staying on your belly you can
crawl under the traps and pick up the claymores you come across without
setting them off.

Crawl to the north and slightly west. if you look past the second fence
you'll see two patrolling attack dogs. Take out your M1911A1 and silence it.
Take careful aim at the dogs and pop a round into each of their heads. This
will alert a nearby sentry but no matter. Switch to your Mk22 and silence it.
When the sentry comes walking up the path take aim at any point of his body
and hit him. He will be knoecked out soon enough.

Now go northwest and look for the tree covered in ivy. Climb it and use the
branch to drop down on the other side of the fence. Now I suggest that you
head northwest. when you come close to another fence crouch or lay down and
take out your silenced Mk22. Take careful aim at the three guards past the
fence and fire a round into each of them. You don't need to take them down
immediately, just make sure that you are hitting them so that they'll be out
by the time you can circle around.

Once you have tagged all three of the guards with a knockout round head along
the path that goes east. Close to one of the pits of mud below you you'll see
a patrolling guard. Lay down and watch him until you can get a clear shot at
him. Try and hit him in the head so there's no chance of him turning and
spotting you.

Assuming that you took out the three guards to the north you should have a
clear path to the exit aside from one last guard who will be on the other side
of the third fence.

  -- Items --

Once you get past the first electric fense head to the east and go through the
two mud pits. You should see a rock wall up ahead. Climb up onto it and
shuffle across to the end of it to pick up the Splitter camouflage. You can
also find the Choco Chip camouflage in the hollowed out stump on your way to
the exit.

  -- Weapons --

                         ----------------------------

Take out your Mk22 and silence it. Move forward to the tree and lie down.
Watch the guard patrolling in front of you and watch him until he stops behind
the turret gun. Cap him in the head and move west. When you are directly in
front of a building, the door of the building. Shoot the guard there with
your Mk22.

Now keep going west until you are forced to turn north. Look for a guard
patrolling north and south here. When he comes into view shoot him. Continue
on north. When you come to the point where you are forced to turn east check
to see where the guards are. If you think you can sneak past them use the
stalking mode or if not just stand back and tranq them. Keep moving through
to the exit. It's just behind the gun turret.

  -- Items --

In the first building you'll find a suppresser for the M1911A1. On the roof
of that bulding is the Water camouflage. In the storehouse just north of this
building is a food storehouse. Inside is a Ration and some Calorie Mate. Just
to the west of this building, in the trench, is the Snow face paint. It's
under the board. Finally, in the building in the north of this area is a
bunch of medical supplies.

  -- Weapons --

There is some TNT in the storehouse to the northeast. You can also find a
mousetrap in the first building, under the beds.

  -- Boss Battle - Ocelot --

Time for a traditional gun duel. This battle isn't especially hard it's just
easy to screw up. Here's some general tips for this battle:

  * Use the first person view to fire off rounds. If you're trying to fire
in the third person you'll find it damn near impossible to hit Ocelot.

  * Don't bother changing your camouflage or facepaint. Ocelot will be able
to see you just as well no matter what you have on. The only time he
won't be able to see you is if you are ducked behind an obstacle.

  *  Treat your wounds immediately.

  * Conserve your ammo. Sure there are ammo boxes that will provide you with
more ammo when you need it but trying to get to it will force you to
expose yourself. Try to keep your shots to a minimum. Fire only when
     you're sure of a hit.

  * Ocelot will only attack with his revolvers. He won't toss genades at you
or anything like that. Just beware that he can use his revolvers to
shoot down the two beehives on your side. If that does happen just use
the Bug Juice or equip the cigar.

  * There is one poisonous snake on each side of the area. Either take care
to avoid them or shoot them.

  * You can climb up the ivy covered tree on the right side but I suggest
that you don't because you have very little cover up there. Generally
you can take one shot and then you'll start to be hit by Ocelot.

  * Shooting down beehives works very well as a distraction. If Ocelot is
preparing to take a shot at you simply shoot down a beehive and the bees
will swarm around him. While he is busy swatting them away you can take
a pot shot at his head for a lot of damage.

  * You can blind Ocelot with Stun Grenades. Just make sure that you don't
do the same to yourself in the process.

  * If you shoot off Ocelot's hat he'll have to go get it. Use this
opportunity to take a shot at him.

Ocelot typically only has a few hiding places. If he goes to a spot you know
from which side he'll peek out from. Take this into account after watching
him a few times. I prefer to stay over on the right side, in the back behind
the rock. From there you can take shots at Ocelot when he is hiding behind
the rock on the right and also when he is hiding behind one of the rocks on
the left.

Ocelot's bullets riccochet off of the rocks and trees so don't think that
you're safe just because you're behind a rock or tree. He can still hit you.
Just keep moving around and you'll be safe from this. Don't stay in one place
for too long.

Ocelot's soldiers will occasionally fire at you but Ocelot will call them off
every time. Just make sure that you take cover when this happens.

  -- Items --

If you beat Ocelot by tranqing him the Animal camo will be available to you in
the next area.

  -- Weapons --

There's some ammo and some grenades to supply you for the duration of the
battle.

  -- Boss Battle - The Pain --

This is probably one of the oddest fights in the game. You're figthing a man
that throws hoardes of bees at you...ever done that before? Anyway, we'll
start out with some tips once again:

  * Use the first person view to fire off rounds. If you're trying to fire
in the third person you'll find it damn near impossible to hit The Pain.

  * Don't bother changing your camouflage or facepaint. The Pain will be able
to see you just as well no matter what you have on. The only time he
won't be able to see you is if you are ducked behind an obstacle or
     submerged in the water.

  *  Treat your wounds immediately.

  * Conserve your ammo. Sure there are ammo boxes that will provide you with
more ammo when you need it but trying to get to it will force you to
expose yourself. Try to keep your shots to a minimum. Fire only when
     you're sure of a hit.

  * When The Pain has bees covering him you cannot hit him. Blast the bees
off with your shotgun or a grenade...or simply wait until they fly away.

  * Smoke Grenades work to clear bees away from either yourself or The Pain.
If you use the Smoke Grenade to clear the bees away equip the Thermal
Goggles to see through and get a good shot in on him.

  * Whenever he sends bees at you simply dive in the water to evade them. The
same goes for almost all of his attacks. You can avoid them by staying
in the water. The only exceptions to this are the Tommy Gun attack and
the Grenade attack in which case you'll have to jump in the water and
     swim away.

Tip by J K

During the fight with THE PAIN, equip the WATER CAMO. This will take your
underwater camo score up to almost 100%, preventing the Pain from seeing you
while you are under water. The RAINDROP CAMO also will increase your camo
score during maneuvers under water. Though for the purpose of beating THE
PAIN, the WATER CAMO is much better.

There's a Life Recovery medicine in the southwest of the chamber where you

There will be a short cut-scene once you make it out o the cave. Besides that
nothing worth mentioning. Just make your way don the cliffs along the paths

  -- Items --

Once you make it down the cliff you'll find the Mine Detector in the small
side area by the exit. Be careful though, there are some mines right by the
mine detector. Crawl in and crawl out to be safe.

  -- Weapons --

There's ammo for the M1911A1, Mk22, and AK-47. Look in the area by the exit.

In this area you'll first encounter the hovercraft guards. They aren't too
much of a problem, just make sure that you don't enter their spotlights while
above water, if you have the Croc Cap you can keep your head up but otherwise
stay low. Make your way to the end of this area either by swimming or
walking. Once you get there take the left fork.

You can find some Chaff Grenades under the water.

                         -------------------------

Whip out your Mk22 and silence it. Swim forwards a bit, to the west and
you'll see a dock come into view. Spot the two guards on the dock and hit
both of them with a shot. One should be on the docks to the west and one
shuffling along through some barrels and crates in the northwest. Once you're
sure they've been hit by a shot simply wait for them to pass out and you'll be
in the clear. Grab the ammo from the armoury and make sure you get the SDV.
Once you've done that exit the area by the way you came in.

  -- Items --

  -- Weapons --

The SDV Sniper Rifle is in the armoury to the north. There's also some TNT,
Ak-47, M37, Mk22, and Grenade ammo in the armoury.

                  ++  Ponizovje Warehouse: Exterior  ++
                 ---------------------------------------

Watch the cut-scene that starts immediately once you enter the area. When it
is over take out your Mk22 and silence it. There are three guards here. One
is in the north patrolling east/west and a bit south, another is walking along
the docks in the west, and the third is by the door in the north. The third
guard will exit the area when he wheels The End back into the warehouse so
you'll only have two guards to worry about.

I suggest using the same strategy as you did in the last dock area. Tag both
of the guards with a shot from your Mk22 and wait for them to pass out. Once
they have rummage around for some items and head through the hallway to the
northeast. That will bring you into the warehouse, your first truly indoor
area in the game.

  -- Items --

The Night Vision Goggles are stashed on the west dock, on the little extension
just after it starts.

  -- Weapons --

You'll find som Mk22, M1911A1, and Ak-47 ammo on the boats moored to the
docks.

This area really isn't hard at all. Simply walk or stalk to the top of the
stairs and look down. You'll be able to spot two guards patrolling and if all
goes well you should be able to land two good headshots for immediate
takedowns. Then move to the lower floor and do whatever you want. There are
some rats and crabs here so grab them if you're running low on food. Next
move up the stairs and stay out of sight of the guard patrolling here. When
he turns to walk up the stairs stalk up behind him and grab him. When you
have him in your clutches do whatever you like. Why not shoot him and get it
over with? Because I said so, you twit!

Just make your way to the door at the end of the hallway here and you'll be in
the next area.

  -- Items --

You can find some Calorie Mate, Instant Noodles, and Rations in the storhouse
on the second floor. The Desert face paint is in the southwest corner of the
bottom floor. You'll find it behind some boxes. There's also some medical
supplies on the second floor on the north end as well as by the door you enter
from.

reached the northern edge of this area climb up the ledge and go through to
the next area.

++ Graniny Gorki Lab Exterior: Outside Walls ++
             ---------------------------------------------------

This area really isn't to hard as long as you stay well camouflaged and stay
alert of where the guards are. Slowly make your way to the west and equip
your Thermal Goggles. If you look past the fence you'll be able to see two
guard dogs and two guards spread out along the entirety of it. I suggest that
you tranq the dogs because they'll cause a problem no matter how careful you
are. Anyways, when you've reached the far west side of the fence look at the
base of it. You'll see a hole there. Crawl through to the other side.

Now look to the east and check to see where the guards are. If there are no
guards nearby crawl forward to the grassy area by the corner. In this grassy
area there is a hole in the wall and you'll be able to crawl through into the
next area.

There is another way in but it involves taking out two guards and then
clobbering another. From where you crawled through the fence look east and
spot the two guards. Wait until they are both in view and then quickly snipe
them both. Now make your way to the opposite side of the fence. Here you
will be able to enter through a door. Lean up against the door and knock on
it. A guard will respond from the other side. Wait a few moments while he
opens it (stand off to the side) and when he comes out from the door grab him
and dispose of him before he can raise the alarm. It's abit risky but it's
more entertainning and proivides a much more direct route through the next
area.

  -- Items --

There is an Mk22 suppresser right in front of the entrance to the area.

  -- Weapons --

++ Graniny Gorki Lab Exterior: Inside Walls ++
              -------------------------------------------------

If you came in from the hole in the wall you'll have a bit of a tough task to
accomplish here. I'm sure that you'll be running a bit low an Mk22 ammo so
you may want to conserve it. I suggest finding a good camouflage to use here
crawl to the brink of the grass and careful take out the enemies furthest from
you and then slowly begin to take out the rest of them. This should prevent
the guards from getting alerted. When you've taken out all the guards in
sight equip your Thermal Goggles and take a look around. If you can spot any
more you've got some more work to do. If not then go to the door.

If you came in from the door in the east chances are you can make due by
simply taking out one guard and running to the door just north of where you
enter the courtyard-type area. When you come out from behind the building
you'll be ablew to spot a soldier nearby. Either CQC him or shoot him and
then go to the door. This is by far the simplest course of action.

When you are about to go through the door equip the scientist camouflage and
remove any facepaint you have on. Once you have done that enter the lab.

  -- Items --

The Oyama face paint is in the ventilation shaft on the east side of the
building.

  -- Weapons --

None. There is some ammo in the armoury in the northeast. You'll find TNT,
Ak-47, M37, and SVD ammo.

                       -----------------------------

Now that you have the scientist camouflage you look just like any other
scientist in the building, at least o the guards that is. As long as you
don't bump into them too much or do anything else to cause suspicion they
won't see through your disguise. Scientists on the other hand will
immediately see through your disguise. Just stay away from scientists or if
you must go past them go by quickly so they can't get a good look at you.

  -- Boss Battle - The Fear --

This is not an especially frightening battle as The Fear would have you think
as much as it is a frustrating and tedious battle. The Fear can easily jump
from tree to tree and quickly outflank you. This battle takes time to beat,
especially on the harder difficulties.

  * Use the first person view to fire off rounds. If you're trying to fire
in the third person you'll find it damn near impossible to hit The Fear.

  * Don't bother changing your camouflage or facepaint. The Fear will be able
to see you just as well no matter what you have on. The only time he
won't be able to see you is if you are ducked behind an obstacle.

  *  Treat your wounds immediately.

  * Conserve your ammo. Sure there are ammo boxes that will provide you with
more ammo when you need it but trying to get to it will force you to
expose yourself. Try to keep your shots to a minimum. Fire only when
     you're sure of a hit.

  * The Thermal Goggles work wonders when you're trying to find The Fear.
Just don't completely wear out your batteries using them.

  * If you're trying to beat The Fear by taking out his stamina bar he will
stop and hunt for foor about halfway through. When he begins to hunt
toss out a bunch of spoiled food around the area and he will climb down
and gobble it up. When he does this he will lose a huge amount of
stamina and if you've done it well you won't have to fight him anymore.
He'll puke his way all the way to his demise.

  * When he uses his arrow attacks just run away from them or hide behind a
     barrier.

  * The traps that were here on your last playthrough are still hanging
around so use your Thermal Goggles to keep an eye out for them.

As soon as the battle starts remove the arrow and heal yourself up, otherwise
Snake will die. Also, restore your lost stamina by eating a meal. Other than
that there isn't much to say besides to follow the tips above.

Tips by J K

before you fight The Fear you need to do some preparation work. Here's what
you should do:

  -- Pre-Fight Prep --

1. Tranquilize three venemous snakes.
2. Equip claymores but do not take them out of backpack.
2a. You can find some claymore mines in electric fence area of the
             pass before you fight Ocelot.
3. Equip Thermal Goggles but do not take them out of backpack.
4. Tranquilize soldiers until you have at least four Rations.
5. Wait and allow animal foods to spoil.
6. Go fight The Fear.

  -- Fight Techniques --

1. Pound The Fear with any and all tranquilizing rounds.
2. When The Fear starts searching for food, do the following.
2a. Set up four CLAYMORE throughout the area.
2b. Toss spoiled foods at players discretion.
2c. Utilize also the poisonous mushrooms foods in area.
2d. During The Fear's search phase, release tranquilized venemous snakes.
   2e. Equip Thermal Goggles.
3. Use Smoke and Stun grenades at leisure.
4. Continue to pound The Fear with tranq rounds.
5. Collect Stealth Camo.

  -- Tactical Analysis --

1. The Fear will try to outflank you. Be aware of this.
2. Remove any and all arrows and cure their wounds asap.

There are two enemies directly ahead of you. It's quite easy to be spotted in
this section so make sure your camouflage has been chosen well and you're
keeping a sharp eye out for the enemy. In any case, make sure you take out
the guards up ahead before you advance too far. Once they have been disposed
of take the fork going to the east. As the path bends towards the west you'll
come to an area with a few more guards patrolling. Whatever tactic you prefer
will work here; you can use CQC or you can use the Thermal Goggles and shoot
them from afar. Once they've fallen move through the area to the north.

The remaining path here snakes through the forest. You'll come across only a
few more guards and they can be quite easily avoided by simply crawling past
them. If you feel the need to you can engage them but in this case you'll
need to be saving your ammo for the areas ahead. I suggest you take the
non-intervention route.

Take the path to the north when you reach the end. The path to the east leads
into a rather large side-area that I do not cover at the moment. I'll go back

  -- Boss Battle - The End --

This battle is a complete departure form every single sniper battle you've
experienced in the series or in any other game. It is a slow-paced, drawn
out, yet very interesting boss battle. You will have to be stealthy and
utilize your camouflage well to sneak into a position to fire at The End.
You'll also have to watch out for the occasional cliff, stream, or poisonous
animal along the way.

  * The End only fires tranquilizer rounds. That means that you cannot die
in this battle. However if your stamina drops to zero you'll be captured
and sent to the prison in Graniny Gorki. If that happens you'll have a
bit of backtracking to do to get back here.

  * Use the first person view to fire off rounds. If you're trying to fire
in the third person you'll find it damn near impossible to hit The End.

  * Utilize your camouflage as effectively as possible. The End has a keen
eye for spotting you and if he does...you're going to be shot.

  * Moving around quickly, even on the opposite side of the map will draw
attention to yourself. The End will always get you if you try and rush
     things along.

  * You'll need to frequently eat food to replenish your stamina because
whenever you get hit you'll lose a huge amount of stamina.

  * Hunt for food often. You'll be depleting your food supplies rather
quickly so don't hesitate to stop and eat if you need to.

  * Remove the tranq rounds immediately.

  * The Thermal Goggles work wonders trying to track and spot The End. You
can spot him in the brush hiding or you can use them to see his footsteps
     and sneak up behind him.

  * The battle takes place over three huge areas. Usually you'll have to
follow The End around to all three to beat him. Use your tracking skills
to follow him and keep plugging at him.

  * When it begins to rain Th End will fall asleep. This is the point where
you can usually run up to him and shoot him with a weapon of your choice.
He'll also have the tell-tale "ZzZ" sign over his head.

  * The Directional Microphone is especially helpful when trying to track The
End. A simple sweep of an area will tell you in what general direction
he is. Once you know that you can begin to triangulate by taking
readings from a few different places. Use this information to flank him.

  * Don't know where The End is? Well, if he just took a shot at you switch
to the map in the Survival Viewer and you can see the location he just
shot from. Now you can head in that direction and begin tracking him
     from there.

  * Conserve your ammo. Sure there are ammo boxes that will provide you with
more ammo when you need it but trying to get to it will force you to
expose yourself. Try to keep your shots to a minimum. Fire only when
     you're sure of a hit.

     *** Get The End's Moss Camouflage ***

To do this simply sneak up behind The End and hold him up with a high-powered
weapon. The first two times he will refuse to give it to you but on the third
he will relinquich the item.

     *** Get The End's Mosin-Nagant Rifle ***

Simply defeat The End by draining his stamina. When the battle is over it'll
be waiting for you.

     *** Skip The End ***

You can entirely skip this particular boss battle. I shit thee not. When you
reach the battle, save your game and turn off your PS2. When you boot it back
up, get to the options screen and change the date about 1 week ahead. When
you load your save back up you'll have a short cut-scene where Snake discovers
The End dead.

*** Get Completely Screwed Over by The End ***

If you save your game during this battle and load it up about 2-5 days later
The End will have used your absentee time to sneak up on you. As soon as you
load up the game you'll be treated to a point-blank shot to the head. Fission
Mailed.

Once the battle is over reference your map. You'll need to get to the
location marked with a small white "X". This is rather simple, just navigate
through the woods here and enter the passage in the hillside up ahead.

  -- Items --

Nothing except all the food scattered around the three areas. Also, The End's
Moss camouflage. For details on that just scroll up.

  -- Weapons --

If you decide to drain The End's stamina you'll recieve his Mosin-Nagant.

                   - Operation Snake Eater -- Part 3 -
                   ???????????????????????????????????????
This part covers from the Krasnogorje Tunnel to the fight with The Fury.

                       ----------------------------
                        ++  Krasnogorje Tunnel  ++
                       ----------------------------

Walk forward through the tunnel. If you need some food there are some spiders
on the wall and some rats running areound on the floor. Grab them if you need
some stamina. Walk forward and OH GOSHDANGIT! You've got another tedious
and long-winded batttle coming up. It's The Ladder! *cue scary music*

  -- Boss Battle - The Ladder --

I can't say that I have any special strategies for tackling The Ladder but I
can assure you that if you keep your focus and remain steadfast you shall
come out the victor.

  * First you will need to engage The Ladder in your epic struggle by walking
up to it and pressing the Action button. Once you have done that the
     only way is up. There_is_no_turning_back.

  * Continue on upwards once you have engaged The Ladder. It will slowly
begin to weaken in power and the end will gradually come into sight.

  * Alas! Halfway through The Ladder decides to take you out for a spin.
I'm sure that you will be nonplussed when the song starts to play but you
cannot stop! Doing so will only slow down your progress and ultimately
     lead to a longer battle.

  * When you have finally passed The Ladder you may think that you are done.
Think again! The Ladder has a unique form of mind-control in that he can
make you want to jump all the way back down and try again. Do NOT do
this! I must warn you that if you try to fall to the bottom and take
another swing at The Ladder you will die. Consider this your warning.

  * Want to use your camouflage, face paint, or weapons? I'm sure you would
love to but you cannot, you are not allowed to. You'll have to tackle
the great beast with nothing but your bare hands.

                   -----------------------------------
                    ++  Krasnogorje Mountain Base  ++
                   -----------------------------------

I suggest that you switch to the Desert face paint and Choco Chip camouflage
for the duration of this mountain area, if you have them. That combination
will work best. If you don't have either of them...find something else.

There are no enemies around here, at least for now. Go to the west and out
into the open air. Get as far to the southwest of the cliff as you can so
that your shots won't be heard as you do some sniping. Your first target is a
sentry posted on the platform about midway through the area. You may notice
that he has a RPG launcher. No, you don't get one now but soon enough you
will. Anyways, shoot that silly-face Russian in the face. Your shot should
go undetected if you went to where I told you.

Now stalk forward over the crest of the rocky lump thing. You'll see a sentry
patrolling down at the bottom, take out your Mk22 and shoot him before he can
spot you. Now pull out your SDV again. You should see two more guards up
ahead. Quickly shoot them both down and then proceed forward. You should see
one last enemy patrolling by the exit to the next area. You know what to do.

If you are finding the above strategy a bit too...noisy you can always snipe
the first guard on the ledge and then stalk around the area picking them off
with your M1911A1 or Mk22. Just take note that the uneven ground here makes
it really hard to tell when you are coming up on an enemy. Be doubly cautious
when moving through here.

One note of minor importance. The entire mountain area has vultures circling
around waiting for fresh meat. When you kill a guard the vultures will swoop
down and start to eat at the bodies. If you happen to need any extra food
simply wait for the vultures to come and then pick it off and add it to your
inventory.

  -- Items --

There's a serum right in the the spot you enter the area. On the western side
of this area you'll be able to find another serum.

  -- Weapons --

Smoke grenades can be found right after you enter the area. Ammo for the SDV
and Mk22 can be found under the rocks by the northern edge of the area. If
you need some grenades, look for the tunnel on the eastern wall of this area
and crawl through. You'll come out on top of that platform where you sniped
the guard. Grab the Grenades that are spinning around up there..

                  ----------------------------------
                   ++  Krasnogorje Mountainside  ++
                  ----------------------------------

This area is going to be a little tough. There are guards patrolling all
along the paths that wind up the side of the mountain and there is very little
cover except for the cliffs. When you first enter the area look to the east
and you'll spot a guard patrolling on the first pathway. I suggest that you
run to the second hole in the cliff and hide there until he passes by. When
he does, CQC him.

The second guard is standing watch by a small cave in the side of the
mountain. Watch him carefully and when he is looking to the east crawl into
the tunnel to the west of him. Now you can come up behind him and CQC him.
Looking at the anti-aircraft gun you'll see a third sentry standing guard.
His patrol takes him up to the next path so use this opportunity to follow him
up and take him out using CQC.

The fourth guard has a short back and forth route. Simply wait at the the
corner of the cliff where he can't see you and then stalk up behind him and
knock his ass out. Now head up the path going around the mountain. You'll
come to a drop off with a great vantage point over this last area. Take out
your Mk22 and tag the two guards in sight with a round. When they have passed
out head up the ramps and slowly walk past the third shack. Notice the sentry
there? Great. Shoot his ass.

  -- Items --

In the top area you'll be able to find a food shack with three rations and a
Calorie Mate. Grab them if you need them. In the shack next to the food
supply depot is some medical supplies.

  -- Weapons --

The RPG-7 an be found in the first shack in the top area. as well as some ammo
for it.

                  ---------------------------------
                   ++  Krasnogorje Mountaintop  ++
                  ---------------------------------

Take out your Mk22 and shoot the guard patrolling just north of you. Now head
up the first ramp and duck into the first shack. Look for a vent in the floor
and crawl through. Keep going and when you come out of the vent turn right
and crawl through that vent. You'll come out by the armoury. On the left
side of the trench is another vent. Crawl through there and when you come out
you'll have a clear path to the exit. Just look around with R2 to make sure
that the path is indeed clear. When you're sure it is run all the way to the
ruins in the northeast. Nobody should bother you.

  -- Items --

None.

  -- Weapons --

The armoury has some TNT and ammo for the Ak-47, Mk22, and grenades.

            -----------------------------------------------
++ Krasnogorje Mountaintop: Behind Ruins ++
            -----------------------------------------------

Go back to the door in the south and enter the ruins.

  -- Items --

Eva will give you the key to the Groznyj Grad Tunnel and some instant noodles.

  -- Weapons --

None.

                ---------------------------------------
                 ++  Krasnogorje Mountaintop Ruins  ++
                ---------------------------------------

Go down the stairs and out the door.

  -- Items --

The noodles Eva gave you. are sitting in the top room.

  -- Weapons --

You'll find some ammo under the bed in the bottom room of the ruins.

                   ---------------------------------
                    ++  Krasnogorje Mountaintop  ++
                   ---------------------------------

Go south through the trench and you'll happen upon a U-turn. Wait just behind
it and you should see a guard with a flamethrower come stomping by. When he
is about to climb onto the ledge hold him up and shoot him. Now just hop over
the next two drops and enter the red door set into the mountainside.

  -- Items --

None.

  -- Weapons --

None.

                       -----------------------------
                        ++  Groznyj Grad Tunnel  ++
                       -----------------------------

There's no enemies here...yet... Run down the stairs and down the tunnel. When
you reach the end of it you will come out into a huge open area. Don't fall
into the pit, you'll die. Just find the ladder over on the northwest side of
the area and climb down for a cut-scene.

  -- Boss Battle - The Fury --

This is going to be one of the toughest battles yet. The Fury wields a
powerful flamethrower that can dish out a huge amount of damage to Snake. The
flames will also stick around after he has finished dousing you or a hallway
with flames so you need to be careful about where you step.

This fight area is composed of several hallways side-by-side and connected by
some narrow middle passages. You'll also find a good number of explosve
barrels in this area so keep that in mind if you want to start randomly
spraying bullets around. You don't want to have a 50-gallon barrel of
explosives go off in your face while you are being chased won by a crazy
astronaut flamer guy. You'll only be adding to your troubles.

That being said, The Fury has only a few patterns to his movement but they can
be quite unpredictable. Right at the beginning The Fury will be flying
overhead. Immediately run north and start looking down the hallways on the
east side of the area. Look for The Fury down at the end of one of them. If
you're having trouble spotting him tyr equipping your Thermal Goggles. Once
you have spotted him whip out your Mk22 and plunk three shots into his body.
This is what you want to be doing for the entire battle. Looking for him and
then firing three shots at him. If you aren't firing at him make sure you are
running from him because he can sneak up on you faster than...something really
fast.

If you do get close to The Fury just try and get away from him as quickly as
possible. If you don't he will keep blasting you with his flamethrower until
you're nothing but a sizzling pile of snake meat.

  -- Items --

There's a Battery stuck behind the barrels right when you come out of the
first section of tunnel. Either destroy the barrels or hop over the railing
to get at it. You'll also find some medical supplies in the exit to the first
part of the tunnel.

  -- Weapons --

There's some ammo scattered all along the tunnel and the stairwell.

This part covers from the end of the fight with The Fury to the fight with
Colonel Volgin.

                       -----------------------------
                        ++  Groznyj Grad Tunnel  ++
                       -----------------------------

Walk forward and climb that ladder...no boss fight this time, PHEW!

  -- Items --

If you tranqed The Fury his camo will be waiting here. You can also pick up
some medical items along the remander of the tunnel.

  -- Weapons --

None.

                     --------------------------------
                      ++  Groznyj Grad Southwest  ++
                     --------------------------------

Alright, this is only slightly intimidating...eh? I guess it is..I'll be here
to hold your hand once again so don't fuss. You'll be starting in a small
lower level that has a few boxes and barrels. Before you do anything though
switch to the Splitter face paint and camouflage, that works best here. Walk
up the stairs and look north between the first columns of storage containers.
Alas! A sentry! If he hasn't spotted you yet run around to the northeast of
him and wait for him to stroll on south towards your starting position. Stalk
up behind him and hold him up or CQC him.

Now head west. Equip the Thermal Goggles sometime before you reach the first
storehouses and you'll be able to spot one more guard patrolling along the
eastern edge of the storehouses. If he is coming towards you, south, lay down
and watch him until he turns back around and heads north. Now that he has his
back to you you can go up behind him and dispose of him before he turns around
and spots you. You wouldn't want that, would you? In any case, your target
is the door set into the northeast wall of this area.

                     --------------------------------
                      ++  Groznyj Grad Northeast  ++
                     --------------------------------

Go into the alleyway between the storage building and the wall. Equip your
Thermal Goggles and scan the area that you can see. You should spot at least
one guard heading away from you. Use your Mk22 to pump a round into his
cerebrum. Now carefully move forward out to the end of this alley. Take
another look around. You should spot two guards to the northwest. Stay prone
and use your Mk22 to quickly take them down. When they've fallen make your
way to the red door just north of you. Equip the scientist camouflage before
you enter and be sure to remove any facepaint.

               ---------------------------------------------
++ Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab: East Wing ++
               ---------------------------------------------

Remember what you learned from the last lab: Stay away from scientists. I
suggest that you do some exploring around the bottom floor to grab some items
and weapon ammo. Once you're done doing that climb the stairs in the north
end of the main hallway. Now make your way through the three rooms here and
wind up in the locker room. Your target, Major Ivan Raidenovich Raikov is
strolling through the complex but it is quite risky to try and grab him and
then drag him all the way up to the locker room. Simply wait for him to come
into the locker room and equip your Cig-Sprayers. You probably will have to
take them out of your backpack. Spray him in the face and then drag him to
the southwest corner of the locker room. Once you do that Snake will strip
off his clothes and stuff him in a locker.

Once Raikov has been stuffed away go into your backpack and put on the Raiden
mask and the Officer camouflage. When you've done that go through the door in
the southwest of the locker room.

               ---------------------------------------------
++ Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab: Main Wing ++
               ---------------------------------------------

Follow the hallway to the end and go through the door.

           ------------------------------------------------------
++ Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab: West Wing Corridor ++
           ------------------------------------------------------

Go to the end of the hallway and you'll have a long cut-scene ahead of you.
Make sure that during the R1 scene you use it to find out the frequency for
the jail cell.

                   -----------------------------------
++ Groznyj Grad Torture Room ++
                   -----------------------------------

You're stuck in a jail cell...oh joy. How do you get out? Well that's a good
question. I really don't know...just kidding. There's actually a few ways
that you can do this.

1) The guard throws food in to you but you can also pick it up and throw it
back out of the cell. if you keep doing this you will trigger a cut-scene.
During that scene there is an R1 option. If you look on thw back of Johnny's
picture you'll see the frequency 144.75 written on the back. Y'know what that
frequency does? It opens the door of the cell. When the game resumes keep
throwing the food out and Johnny will kep eating it, ultimately giving him a
bad case of the runs. When he runs out of the cell area to the bathroom enter
in the radio frequency. When the door unlocks run out of the cell and exit
the torture room through the door at the end of the hallway.

2) A more up-front approach is to simply enter 144.75 into your radio and go
out and attack Johnny. You take some damage by doing this but it is much
faster.

3) Use the Fake Death pill. Haven't used that one much, eh? Johnny will
rush into the cell and see what is going on. When he does, take the Revival
Pill, attack Johnny, and escape.

If you leave the transmitter in the enemy will be able to track your movements
more easily and you'll have to make it past a group of Ocelot's soldiers later
one before you meet up with Eva. I suggest that you take it out so that you
don't have to deal with the Ocelot unit yet again. If you are feeling pumped
